"I hoped it was you."
You jump pushing your book and cup of coffee away. You take off your reading glasses and look towards the source of the interruption. Just standing there in all his glory was your ex-fiancé. He was glowing. He had let his hair grow but not as long as when you first met him.
"Uh Hi." You say slowly. You're engrossed with his new features. He seemed like a new person. But you managed to pick up your jaw as he took a seat across from you.
"Hey, y/n. It's been so long. Two years."
Two kind of amazing years.
"Yeah. How have you been, Harry?" You start to put away your glasses and book and wrap you hands around your coffee to keep you from running away.
For the first months you hoped Harry had hurt as much as you did over the separation. The hate you received over the breakup made public ended up with you in therapy and him starting a world tour. But you couldn't stop smiling as you saw him sitting across from you now.
"I've been amazing, how are you?"
"I'm great. Just got back in town. I went to Cancun for the summer with my friends for a bridal shower." His eyes flow to my hands quickly most likely looking for a ring.
"That's great. Your tan looks amazing, you can't get that type of sun in Cali." He chuckles leaning forward. You both sit in silence and wait for one of y'all to speak up.
"I'm sorry for the way I treated you. I was a bad person. So immature and so ungrateful. It was ugly and you didn't deserve that. I regret the words I said so much. Not a day went by where I didn't think about it. I could've handled it better but you were right for walking out on me." He breathes out.
"Thank you, Harry. Your apology means a lot. I also hope you can forgive me for your guitar—"
"Baby you don't have to—"
"I'm not your baby" you interrupted with a softer tone. "Harry, I'm not your baby. We lost that two years ago." He reaches out for your hand and lets out a breath.
"Let's fix it. Please. We are still young and we still have love for each other I can tell. We can start fresh."
You knew Harry was serious. He hasn't been with a girl ever since and you haven't gone on a date after you broke up. You wanted to move on but you also enjoyed finding your purpose. And now you were finishing therapy with a new job and a clear head. It was an easy decision. He wasn't clouding your thoughts and you knew exactly what you wanted.
"We can, but I like being single. I mean.. I just love being my own person now that I have it figured out. I love you, I do. But now that I know I'm not just Harry Styles' girlfriend, I mean do you know how that feels? So empowering to be someone you always wanted to be. I love the new me."
"And you can't be the new you around me?" He says with a hurtful tone, returning his hand to his side of the table.
"Maybe one day, but not today." You say smiling softly. You get up from your seat and grab your bag. You walk around the table and start to head out the door. You stop by Harry's chair and lean down to kiss his cheek.
"If it's meant to be, we'll meet again" you whisper before walking out the cafe.
