Steven slammed Lily's door shut and turned to her.
"You've gotta pack. Now!"
She frantically pulled out her suitcase from under the bed, threw it open, and ran over to the dresser.
"But where will I go?" she cried, quickly glancing over her shoulder as she yanked clothes out of the drawers and threw them into the case.
He ran out of the room and brought back his phone as well as a ring of keys. He pulled up his contacts and shoved the phone into her hand.
"Put your number in."
After she did that, he gave her the keys. "Take my car and drive a mile or so away and wait for me."
She turned to him, bewildered. "I can't just leave you here."
"This is between me and her. You can't be caught in the middle of this."
He stopped and listened.
"I'm gonna go out and see what's going on. Don't wait for me to come back. Just go!"
Without waiting for her to answer, he slipped out of the room and slowly closed the door behind him. He ran to his room and opened the top drawer of his dresser. He dug around until he found the charm. It was stupid of him to have taken it off.
He changed out of the robe, slipped the chain over his head and tucked the charm into his shirt. Then, he went into the hallway and stood there, listening.
He could hear someone moving about downstairs. Slowly, he crept towards them and peered over the banister.
The sound was coming from somewhere beyond the living room. Probably the kitchen.
Steven heard the sound of a blade briefly scraping a hard surface as he descended. He stopped in the living room as a pang of fear shot him. Nothing else though, just the normal sounds of someone moving around.
No one can be cooking right now, he thought to himself, that's insane.
He moved steadily, not going near the corner as he approached the kitchen. The less risk of being jumped, the better.
As the kitchen came into full view, his eyes widened in horror as he took in the scene before him.
There was Cameron, naked and laying as flat as possible on the counter. Between him and the stove were some peppers. Rose stood over him with a cleaver in hand. She held a pepper against his back, and methodically cut it into slivers. The blade of the cleaver cut thin lines into Cameron's flesh as she chopped.
A cutting board! he cried in his mind.
He had a hard time conjuring up something to say. This sadomasochistic scene was the most disturbing thing he'd ever seen. Cameron didn't move or make any sound.
"Stop it!" he cried. "What the fuck's wrong with you?"
She didn't look up. "What, now you wanna ruin my cooking?"
"This isn't going to last. I won't let it."
"Well it's not like someone's protesting."
Steven heard Lily padding down the stairs. He hoped she wouldn't come over and see what was going on—just get out of the damn house.
"He's not right!" he cried. "You're taking advantage of a sick person!" He knew his words meant nothing—but could hardly control himself as he assessed the situation.
