An ear-splitting scream was heard, followed moments after by an unfamiliar howl. A gray headed popped up, ears rotating to catch any more odd noises. The small body rose out of the moss nest and arched its back into a stretch. Their jaws parted into a yawn, and they tiredly blinked sleep out of their eyes.
Eaglepaw retracted from his cosy warm nest and carefully stepped over the sleeping bodies of his denmates. He squeezed through the den entrance, which seemed to be getting smaller every day. Eaglepaw pointed his nose to the star littered sky, a near invisible cloud billowing from his nose when he exhaled.
It was barely moonhigh. The only cats awake would be the two guarding MistleClan's camp entrance. Many battles had occured since the Clans' lost their ancestors, but that was seasons ago. The battles of anger and fear had ceased. Thanks to the now deceased mediator leader, the Clans had learnt how to live without such a powerful influence.
Eaglepaw dragged his paws over the trodden earth. MistleClan was lucky to have such a large clearing in their massive, mossy forest. Eaglepaw had always wondered if his ancestors had spent moons clearing out this same spot just so he would have a place to sleep.
The dark gray and white patched apprentice slunk closer to the camp entrance. The roar he had heard seemed to slither from the back of his mind, to the front. He had never heard such a strange yowl before. What if somecat was seriously hurt? Eaglepaw wasn't always right, and he was sure the camp guards would know something.
He rushed toward the entrance, determined to figure out the tiny, unimportant mystery. He poked his head through the bush covered entryway, glancing to both cats. One was sleeping, and the other was staring at him with piercing eyes.
"Forestice, did you hear that roar?" Eaglepaw asked in a hushed voice. He thought he had sounded stupid to the older tom.
Forestice stared for a moment longer, his expression twisting into frustration. Eaglepaw was now even more confused. Had he actually sounded that stupid? The apprentice rocked on his haunches with embarrassment.
"I'm not in the mood for jokes, Eaglepaw. And please smack Freckleash awake." Forestice turned away, his unimpressed gaze now resting on the shadows of the forest.
Eaglepaw stared at the red tom for a moment longer. How did an awake cat not hear that ear-splitting scream followed by a roar? Defeated, Eaglepaw sagged his shoulders and turned to look at his sleeping father. He shoved him lightly, almost sending him toppling over.
Freckleash's golden amber eyes widened and he ungracefully straightened up. The dark gray patched warrior gave Eaglepaw a small nod and pointed his tail toward the camp entrance.
Eaglepaw turned around with an inaudible groan and squeezed through the camp entrance. He skidded down the short slope, stopping to ponder in the camp clearing. Eaglepaw was sure he had heard something. Someone was out there, probably in need of his help.
Of course Talonstar, and maybe even his father, would disapprove of Eaglepaw's decisions, but the apprentice wouldn't let this mystery slide.
Eaglepaw was frozen for a moment. The same question was running circles in his mind. What was that sound? And whoever made it, Eaglepaw would make sure to find out.
