My first day in Canada was full of amazements it was a cool and clean country I did spend for about the whole week travelling the country, studying their culture and many requirements to live there. I had an apartment to live in it was made of three pieces and one main salon with one dining room and a kitchen. It was really pretty and enough for me. During the first week, as a new comer I had to talk to my parent everyday telling them how the life was going in Canada. What a good view? Canada was really different from Nairobi, where I used to be from my childhood. But as my mom have told me, no day would last without hearing the police sirens out in streets, criminals were there too including also drug dealers. There is a day that I called the black day. I was going to buy something from a shop, as I was travelling I met an old lady who was carrying many bags, I saw that they were heavier for her so I decided to carry some for her. I didn't know him but she also doesn't know me, she didn't hesitate to let me help her with the bags but she gave me a nice look smiling. I didn't ask her too much questions because I thought that she was very tired. But after few minutes in a walk, I decided to ask her where we were heading because I was new there, I didn't know many areas. She told me that we were near, but I was shocked by her clothing style, she was wearing only blacks.
Sirens again! What a shit? What is going on? I asked the old lady. But she was busy in her side bag, she removed a black face mask, I started to get fear. "What is going on? Why are you putting that...?" I asked quickly, gazing around. "Shut up and run, the police are searching for me. Hold the bags tight, follow that way!" she shouts to me, she was really challenging me. But it was me who did stupidity, to carry something I don't know for someone I also don't recognize! Holy marry! What is happening on me? I started to think how my life is ruined during the first week in Canada, not yet starting my studies. Well, the old lady was a bandit she knew all the quarters well, maybe she was familiar with being chased by the police. We entered a slum made by many small houses but it was on the sea shore, the old lady headed in the tunnel and I followed her because I was starting to believe her experience in escaping games. It was really amazing and like movies I used to watch every day. At the end of the tunnel, it was a good view of a lake, there was a boat on the shore and the old lady was heading there. I couldn't hear the sirens again, may be the police were not on our back. "What if this woman is a drug dealer or is a human trafficker?" I started to get butterflies in my stomach I was sweating as if I was in Olympic competitions. Any way, it was just like that, cause I was been chasing by police. "What if they catch me?" I started to ask myself. We entered the boat, but I was so afraid my heart was been pounding all the way. An empty boat! I was surprised to find no one inside the boat. I started to ask myself who was going to ride it for us, unfortunately there was no one. The old woman stared at me, and then she asked me to sit. She removed her face mask and her black glasses. "Why are you so afraid? This is how I live here, I face this every day but they will not catch me, am older than them they are still young in that game. Thank you for your help, you are lucky to look in my face. Many wish to face me but they can't because they are not lucky". The lady was so serious and wise in her job. "So who are you?" I asked her with fear. "In this job, we don't tell people who we are, for we trust no one". I was wondering which kind of job she was talking about because till now I didn't know what she was carrying inside her bags. After hearing that she doesn't trust anyone, the fear rises I started to think that my end was near because she will kill me for seeing her face. I started crying but very quiet then I asked with tears:"are you a killer?" The woman saw me crying and she said:'' why are you crying? You want to know who I am. I'm not a killer at all but I do it when it is necessary". She started laughing. My fear was multiplying then I said:" please don't kill me, am new here I came just to study; my home is in Africa, in Kenya. This is my first week here and I don't know anyone except you. So please I will not tell anyone". I had already set in my head that the woman will kill me, but it was far from what she was planning to do for me, I was innocent. The woman knelt down and she picked the small photo of a young boy, then she started crying:" I was once a mother I had a child, a baby boy! It has been sixteen years when we fell apart because of this job. His father was also killed because of this job but I can't let it be like that. I have to find my son and I believe he is alive and he is a drug dealer!" I started to feel her pain, but it was not my concern, what was in my head was only my life. She doesn't show me the picture but what I knew is that she has a son. She opened her other bags and they were full of cocaine, it doesn't surprise me because now I was fitting in the situation well. With a calmed voice I asked:" so, what do you want for me? I can't help you with your problems because as I've told you, am new here in Canada and I don't even know your son. Please let me go I will keep this a secret, I beg". She stood up then went into the other room of the boat I guess she was going to think about it. I started to plan how I was going to escape from the boat, but it was not a good idea because we were being hunted by the police out there. The woman returned in the room with different clothes from the ones she was wearing before. She handed me also clothes. "put on those clothes, it is the time to take you where you were, don't be afraid they don't know our faces, what could help them was our clothes but we are already changing them. Do it quickly".
