(This is based off an AU I thought of where Laurens dies at Yorktown)
"Hamilton!" Laurens cried. "Hamilton, they've surrendered! They've sur—"
His happiness was cut short when a shot pierced him through the chest. He fell to his knees, clutching the wound. Hamilton's eyes widened and his breathing sped up as he ran towards the wounded Laurens.
"Laurens!" He yelled. Hamilton grabbed him by the waist, pulling him towards the surgeon tent. Tears formed in his eyes as blood poured out of the hole in Laurens' chest.
"Laurens, Laurens stay with me," Hamilton begged. "Please stay with me. I can't lose you. Please."
They reached the tent, and a surgeon rushed over to attend Laurens' wound. Hamilton could only stare in horror as Laurens screamed and cried out in pain. He wanted so bad to hold him, whisper little affirmations in his ear, tell him that everything is going to be ok— that he's gonna be ok.
Hamilton pulled up a chair next to the table his lover lay on, gripping his hand tightly. He couldn't take it anymore. He broke into tears, his shoulders shaking.
"I heard what happened. Is he ok? is he going to be ok?" Tilghman rambled as he stepped into the tent. He rushed over to Hamilton and took him into his arms.
"He's bleeding way too much. If I don't close the wound, he could die," the surgeon explained.
Tilghman gasped. "But... But he's been shot before! He's survived multiple wounds before! How is this any different?" He spat out. Hamilton tugged on Tilghman's cuff, gesturing for him to sit down. Tilghman got the hint and sat on the ground.
This went on for an hour. At some point Lafayette came in, trying to help in any way he could. There wasn't much that could be done other than just sit and listen to Laurens' cries of pain.
Eventually, Laurens' screams quieted, turning into mere whimpers. then everything went quiet. Laurens went limp, and the surgeon bowed his head.
"I'm sorry sirs," he whispered. "Lieutenant Colonel Laurens has lost far too much blood. He's dead."
Hamilton didn't hear Lafayette's quiet sobs. He didn't feel Tilghman lower his head onto Hamilton's shoulder. All he could focus on was his lover's dead body lying limp on the table, blood dripping down his chest. His eyes were still half-open, cold and grey and lifeless, not the beautiful sky blue Hamilton knew so well. Hamilton quietly left the tent, Lafayette and Tilghman following him. Lafayette hugged him, but Hamilton could barely feel it. He missed the way Laurens would hug him tightly on those cold nights at valley forge, the way he would run his hands through Hamilton's fiery red hair.
He didn't want to go home to his Betsey. It wouldn't feel right to leave Laurens, even though he was dead. It was unfair. Hamilton still had so many more kisses to give him, so many more things to say.
Hamilton wiped his eyes and walked away.
