He woke up, in the middle of the night, to what seemed like an earthquake. His bed was shaking, his room was shaking, his entire house was shaking. Everything was shaking. He glanced at the rock in the corner of the room, ensuring it was safe. It was shaking, too. He hopped off the bed, grabbed the rock, and ran into his parents' room. They weren't there.

Well that was worrisome.

He ran around the house. He finally realized they weren't inside, and ran out the front door, which was unlocked. He was relieved to see his parents outside and well. He reached for the rock in his pocket. It wasn't there.

His parents attempted to stop him from running back inside, but he did anyway. He ran back to his parents' room, where he found the gem sitting out in front of the door. He must have put it down to open the door, or something. He grabbed it and ran back towards the door.

A jar of water slipped off a shelf,

Falling,

Falling,

Falling...

Just down in front of him.

He stepped in the water and fell, but managed to keep hold of the little rock. He could see torchlight outside the window and through the door, which had slammed shut. He knew he wouldn't make it.

Pulling at a loose floorboard, he finally got it free and slipped the little rock underneath, into the dirt. The ceiling shuddered and began to fall.

He knew his fate. And that was okay with him. As long as the little gem stayed safe.
