Chapter 4

By now the sun had fully set and the full, white moon had started to rise over the lake.

I shivered. Full moons always gave me the creeps. Too many horror stories about werewolves, serial killers, and the like had left my imagination a little wild at times.

It just seems like so many creepy things could happen during a full moon.

Looking across the beach, jthough, the scene was anything but frightening. Dozens of drunk teens, all laughing and dancing, wasn't really the ideal scenery for a horror story.

I shook off the weird feeling. Nothing happens during full moons, pull yourself together, I told myself. Ugh, curse my avid imagination.

Following Brian and Kev, Chrissy and I made our way over to a couple coolers on the edge of the horde of people. Within no time, Kev and Brian had deserted us to go join a group of guys around a keg, which left Chrissy and I alone.

"Ooh look at him. Damn." Chrissy whistled under her breath, checking out yet another guy.

"Really Chris?" I raised an eyebrow at her, a talent that I am immensely proud of. It comes in handy in times like this, which happen often with Chrissy around.

"I'm serious Steph! This guy is perfection! I have honestly never seen anything like him..."

"He can't be that special. Which one is he?" I asked curiously as I whirled around and started looking at all the guys around us.

I would definitely describe Chris as 'boy-crazy' but she usually wasn't oozing over someone's perfection like this.

"Geez! Don't make it soo obvious!" She quickly grabbed me by the arm. "8 o'clock." She nodded over my shoulder.

I casually turned my head, trying to catch a glimpse of this guy that had her in such a tizzy.

Whoa.

I quickly turned around before he could catch me staring. I don't blame Chrissy for spazzing like she did.

I have never seen a guy quite like him. Straddling a cooler,  he sat there like a god.   Light brown hair, almost caramel colored, was spiked up on the top of his head, which showed off his perfect face.

He had glistening blue eyes and as he laughed at something someone said, I saw his amazing white teeth. In the one glimpse I got of him, I saw his perfect cheekbones and dimples.  Oh those dimples! In my opinion, every man should have them. They're just perfection.

"I know right! Isn't he totally amazing?!" Chrissy squealed after seeing my face.

I quickly composed myself and Dom's face popped into my head and I immediately felt guilty.

I had a perfectly perfect boyfriend and here I was, checking out this other guy I had never seen before in my life. What kind of a girlfriend am I? Shame rolled through me.

"He is pretty attractive I guess," I admitted, "I prefer Dom though."

"Oh you just say that because you have to. Puh-lease." She drew out the word, "you cannot tell me that if you were single you would not jump on that."

"I would not! You know I've always had a crush on Dom and only Dom."

"Whatever.." She said as if she really didn't believe me.

"I'm serious! I wouldn't!"

"Okaaaaay. Geez. No need to get your panties in a twist. I'm going to go talk to him." She had that determined glint in her eyes.

Oh no. I had only seen that look once before. She was in 5th grade and she was obsessed with Bobby Pewter. Right after she told me she was going to get him to kiss her, she had that exact glint in her eye. If this was anything like 5th grade, I felt sorry for Mr. Gorgeous. She was not going to give up.

"Hey! Where'd he go?!?" Chrissy had a bewildered look on her face as she looked past me.

I turned to see that the cooler that Mr. Gorgeous was once sitting on, was empty. There was no one there.

"Oh no no no no. This cannot be happening to me right now. Ugh!" Chrissy fumed, crinkling up her nose.  "I was so looking forward to that."

I laughed at her face. She glared at me with a killer stare.

"This is SO not funny right now Steph. "

I honestly wasn't surprised at this.  Little Miss Boy-crazy wasn't one to back down from a chase. Never has been, never will be.

"C'mon Chris, maybe you'll see him later."

"I'd better. Did you see him?? I mean-oh my god. I have never ever seen his equal."

Funnily enough, she said this more times than one would think. Then another guy comes around and she's all "oh my gawd!" about him. It's a cycle that I have gotten used to over the years, while I have been content to give my affection to one guy. Speaking of which, I hadn't seen Dom since we got here.

Pulling myself away from Chrissy and her distress, I started to walk back where I had last seen Dom.

"..and his eyes did you see his eyes? Wait, are you even listening to me? Steph wait up!" I heard her run to catch up with me.

"Geez what's the hurry? One second you're there, the next you're tearing off, like you're on a mission or something."

“Sorry, I have an actual boyfriend to go check on. You could’ve stayed there and looked for your dream guy, you know.” I told her, rolling my eyes.

“Whatever,” she mumbled, “There are so many people here I’d probably never find him again anyways.”

I could tell she was down, just by the way she was following me through the crowd. The normally chatty girl she was, barely said a word as we greeted people we knew from school. I knew as well as she did, that at parties like these, unless you get a name from someone, it's extremely likely you will never see them again. I felt for her, I really did. I could tell that she fell hard for this guy, just by seeing him from across the way. Unfortunately there wasn’t anything we could do. It was up to fate if Chrissy would ever have a real conversation with this guy.  Life was unfair in that kind of way.

But where was Dom?! You would have think I’d have seen him at some point tonight. Seeing Chrissy so bummed over losing this guy made me just want to be with my own man.  Every girl needs a little loving and I need it now! By now we had made our way through the giant mass of people around the fire and were standing by a pair of speakers by the parking lot. Still nothing.

“Do you see him anywhere?” I shouted over the booming of the speakers.

“I told you we probably wouldn’t see him again tonight. Just drop it.” She scowled at me.

“What? No Dom! He’s the one I’ve been looking for this whole time. Were you even looking?” I shook my head. That girl.. I love her but she isn’t always on top of things.

Once, I sent her to the store for a coke and she came back with a bag of Fritos. Like I said, she’s a bit scatterbrained.

“Oh no. Sorry Steph, I have no clue where my mind is at tonight.” She suddenly broke off and stared at something behind me with a sickened look on her face. “Um. Steph. I don't know if you want to see this, but I think I found him.”

The look she gave me broke my heart before I even turned around. With a heavy heart I turned and there he was. My perfect, amazing boyfriend. Making out with someone else. My own personal horror story, come to life.
