I stare at the boy in front of me. He looks about my age, nineteen, with soft brunette locks that I just want to run my hand through. His eyes are the colour of fresh summer leaves, green from basking in the sun. He smiles slightly and his face indents at the sides with the most adorable dimples I've ever seen. No. I say scolding myself. You can't think like that, he's a human. All of a sudden, two little miniature versions of me pop up on my shoulders. One is a dark fairy, and the other, a royal knight such as myself. It seems as though it was the royal knight scolding me before, for the dark fairy looks at the other and says, technically, she will have to pretend to have feelings for him anyway, and it would be better if they were real.
I mentally slap them off my shoulders and bow my head down towards my mother. "When will we be leaving for New York?"
"One hour, then you have fifteen minutes to enter the portal before it shuts. Once you arrive in New York, you have two months to complete your mission. Olive is already packed, and Mason didn't bring anything here, so go pack up and meet back. Don't be late or I'll have your wings."
I hold back the urge to shudder, knowing she means what she said. Instead I dip my head once again and turn around, walking out the door. Walking through the halls back to my bunk, I think about Mason and the look of his face. He was absolutely perfect in every way, but he was human. It was forbidden. You may be wondering by this point why my mother wasn't banished, well...
When my mother met my dad, she slowly fell in love with him, and though it was against the law, she got pregnant...with me. After a few weeks, she had decided to give up her spot on the throne and her wings for good. But my dad died before she had the chance. So, she came back and had me, all in hiding so no one would know. When I was born, she told everyone and said I was an orphan, and when my parents had died, she took me in as her own. Sad, yes, but it's what she had to do to keep her royalty. I grew up, learning to become a knight, for not being the true daughter of the Queen, I didn't hold a spot in the royal line. My mother never married again, and never had another child, leaving my cousin with the promise of the throne.
When I arrive at my bunk, I can feel that the presence is wrong. Someone is here. Cautiously, I walk through the door, smelling the air for new scents, interrupting the staleness from my morning arouse. Scanning the walls and the furniture, my eyes land on a heap of clothes in the corner of my room, seeming to be breathing. Hesitantly, I walk towards the heap of my soiled garments, grabbing a poker from next to my fireplace. Walking soundlessly with the help of faerie magic, I leap forward and stab the heap, which then erupts in an explosion of laughter and screaming.
"Ouch! What was that for? I was sleeping under there." My peculiar friend Olive stares at me with a scowl that slowly lifts into a smile, "Time for packing!" Running past me, she swiftly digs my suitcase from beneath my mattress, and lays it open on the rumpled blankets, revealing the unattended clothes from my last trip to the world of man. Discarding each piece into the pile of garments she had been sleeping in, she turns to my closet, pulling out article after article of clothing, then finally turning back to the suitcase where they are all packed in splendidly perfect piles, which she had done with the help of the neatness spell she always uses.
"Okay, we're done. Let's go so we can speak with my mother before departure." I am eager to inquire about the portal we will be travelling through and the species that stole the relic from us. I want to know if I will need extra supplies.
"Oh no you don't missie. You sit right back down, we are going to have a little chat about that Mason. You are honestly the luckiest person alive to be able to have a valid excuse to date that hottie. Although, that must make it hard. I was watching your meeting from...somewhere. I saw the way you looked at him. It really makes my blood boil watching you suffer things, but it is the way it is."
I don't answer, just stand up, grab my suitcase, and leave my bunk, walking back out into the halls towards the spell room. This is where we will be sent of from, and where the portal will be created. I hear the sound of Olive's steps behind me as I step through the doorway to Ratkin's study, the spell room. When I step inside, a pungent stench fills my nostrils, making them burn. Portals are not created from the nicest of materials.
The first thing I see is my mother, sitting next to Mason on a stool. Mason's cheeks are puffed and slightly flushed, considering he is sitting by the fire. His tousled hair looks more strokable than before, and his green eyes are slightly brighter. He holds up his hand and shakes it slightly when he catches my eye. "Hey there. Are you ready to come to New York?"
I walk towards the two of them and sit on a stool similar to the one Mother is on. "I guess, but mostly I'm just scared. I've been to America, but never New York. It sounds too big for my taste."
"I grew up in New York, I practically know everything about it. I can give you a tour when we get there. It can be our first date." When he says this lawst part, he makes finger quotes in the air to show the fakeness of it. I smile but don't speak again before Olive walks in.
"Two minutes till departure. Are we all set?" Both me and Mason nod, not speaking. "Good to hear."
After the two minutes of silence are finished, Ratkin spoke, "All you have to do is step through the portal and you'll be on your trip, but to avoid accidents, you must close your eyes and hold your breath. If you do not do so, half of you might get to New York, if even, but the other half would be in Brazil or Japan, our who in the name of wings knows where. I have the portal set for New York, but you must clear your mind or your body will be torn apart within the portal and you will die. Good luck."
Mason is the first to step up to the portal. Before stepping in, he looks back at me and winks, and then with a step, he's gone. Olive insists on going next, and when she steps through, it's more of a leap of confidence and grace. Now that it is my turn, I hesitantly step up to the portal. Turning to my mother, she gives me a nod, and without breaking her gaze, I step through into the oblivion that awaits me.
