Chapter 68

A Slightly Paradoxical Ending

Sirius reached for Harri as she was standing there in front of the portal. It was strange to see her as the blonde that taught him more offensive magic than he and Remus would like to admit. He shuddered remembering all the times that he flirted with her during that year.

He, Anne, Remus, Tonks, Hermione, Luna, Draco and Cedric were all in the backyard of Grimmauld Place. It was the only area that was safe to open a magical portal without the ministry knowing.

He watched in horror as she threw an earring at Voldemort, causing an explosion. Sirius bit his cheek, knowing that this could destroy the fragile connection that the portal had to their time period. He saw Harri pick up a rock and scratch a rune into and throw it at her enemy. He didn’t see what it did, but she put her wand down and relaxed.

A few seconds later, a boy, who Sirius assumed was George, ran over to her. The spoke quietly and she took his hand. Yep, that was George.

They turned towards the portal and it wavered. He saw Harri’s eyes widen she smiled sadly as it began collapse on itself. She knew the consequences. She waved as the portal disappeared.

The dog animagus wanted to shout at her, but the portal closed and his goddaughter was gone. From what he remembered of the battle, Harriet Jane Porter died that day. Her body was found in a crumpled heap on the ground. Sirius wanted to know how she had been killed, he just saw her. Who killed his goddaughter all those years ago?

“Sirius...” he heard Remus call from behind him, but he was still in shock. After everything that happened during Harri’s six years at school he had never lost her. She had always come back with a snarky smile and a quick witted comment. Sirius fell to the ground on his knees, he couldn’t believe it...

“She’s gone,” he whispered and he felt someone put a hand on his shoulder. It was Anne, someone that Harri approved of and told him to propose to because she wouldn’t stick around forever if he didn’t commit. He had taken his goddaughters advice and proposed a month ago. Anne looked like she was going to cry. She had become rather close to Harri.

He heard a sniffle from behind him. He turned around and saw that just about everyone was in tears. Hermione was being hugged tightly by Cedric. Luna was sobbing into Draco’s shirt. Draco just looked lost, Harri was the first friend that he had ever made. It reminded Sirius a lot of himself after James died.

Sirius turned to Remus and Tonks, who had been quiet. Both of them had silent tears falling down their faces. The situation was hopeless. She was gone for good this time. They had lost Harri. Sirius had lost his goddaughter...no he had lost more than his goddaughter. He had lost his daughter, the little girl he raised since she was barely over a year old. He felt tears start to fall from his eyes as well.

“ ‘Ave I come at a bad time?” A French voice asked from behind the group. They spun around to see Fleur standing in front of them. Sirius wanted to chuck her out of the house for a comment like that, but she was one of Harri’s close friends and she deserved more respect than that. Hermione was the only one willing to approach the blonde Veela.

“Yes, Fleur, you have. Harri was lost in the past. We’re never going to see her again,” Hermione explained, eyes watering at the end.

“Ow long ago was she sent to the past? Could she still be alive?” Fleur asked, blues eyes curious. She wasn’t a Tri-Wizard champion for nothing. There had to be some way to get Harri back.
