Potions has always been a subject of interest to you. However, having Professor Snape teach the subject since you've been at Hogwarts has really drained any joy you may have gained from the subject.

But this year, there's a new Potions professor—Professor Slughorn. From what you've heard, he sounds like he'll be a lot more enjoyable to have as a professor compared to grouchy Snape.

For once, you have no traces of anxiousness for your Potions class, knowing you won't have to deal with Snape at all.

When you get to the classroom, it's already nearly full. Everyone's crowded in a half-circle towards the back of the room, facing a table at the front of the classroom with a huge cauldron on.

You scan the crowd, searching for one face in particular. Unsurprisingly, he's not there yet, so you stand in an available space and wait, hoping he'll come through before the class starts.

"Good morning, everybody!" Professor Slughorn appears from behind the group of students, making everyone turn their heads to find him. He walks towards the cauldron, smiling at people as he goes.

Just as he reaches the cauldron, two ginger-haired boys stumble through the door.
Here he is.
Fred Weasley and his twin brother George.

You've been really close friends with both the Weasley Twins since you started at Hogwarts, sharing most classes throughout your time at the school. But your feelings run a little deeper for Fred—not that you could ever tell him, of course.

Fred spots you and gives you a wave, heading in your direction.
"Hey, Y/N. Have we missed much?" he asks, slotting into place beside you.
"Hey, Fred. No, I think you're just in time," you respond, then giving George a wave when he reaches the spot where you're standing.
"Oh goodie, we don't want to miss any of our precious study time!" Fred rubs his hands together in mock excitement, looking a little evil in the process.

Before you can respond, Professor Slughorn begins his speech at the front of the class. He introduces himself and the potion that you'll be learning about today—Amortentia.

You've heard of the infamous love potion before but are too shy to give your knowledge in front of the class, especially because you know Fred will tease the living daylights out of you for knowing about a love potion—even if you also know he'd be secretly impressed.

"Right!" Slughorn claps his hands together. "I want a volunteer to come and tell the class what they smell."

You can feel yourself almost shrinking, trying to make yourself as small as possible so you don't get picked. Unfortunately for you, Fred has the opposite idea. He gently grabs your wrist and raises it in the air.
"Y/N will do it, Professor!"
Your cheeks redden instantly as you try to pull your arm away from Fred, but the damage is done.
"Excellent, young Y/N! Come on up."

Glaring at Fred over your shoulder, you watch as he winks at you. You try to hold back your smile as you shake your head in fond disappointment.

If Fred wasn't in the class, you would have no issue whatsoever with smelling the potion. However, you have a feeling about what you might smell.

Stepping up to the raised table, you make sure your hair is out of your face before leaning slightly forward into the thin pink fumes emanating from the potion.

Taking a deep breath in, the smells overpower your nose, although not in a bad way. Of course, what you smell is attractive to you.

"Don't keep it a secret, Y/N! Let us know," Slughorn booms, nodding in encouragement.
You straighten up, looking just at Slughorn, refusing to turn and face the class—and Fred.
"I smell...fireworks or like a bonfire, cedar wood, and homemade cooking."
Slughorn hums with interest before gesturing for you to go back to your place and continuing his speech about the potion.

You're not surprised by what you smelt. Fred and George are always testing fireworks, leaving themselves often coated in a bonfire-like smell; Fred's aftershave has a cedar scent to it, and the homemade cooking reminds you of the Burrow, his family home, which you have been lucky enough to visit numerous times to visit the twins. Despite that, you can only hope the smells are vague enough for Fred not to realise. Or, you can pray that he zoned out completely, as he sometimes does in class, and perhaps he didn't even hear what you said! Although that might just be wishful thinking.

"Hmm, how interesting, Y/N," Fred whispers to you as you rejoin him. "We'll have to talk about this after class." He raises both his eyebrows at you, giving you a knowing look with a shadow of a smirk on his face.
"Oh, shut up, Fred."
He definitely knows.

The rest of the class goes by without a hitch, with Fred staying true to his word—he doesn't mention the potion at all...until you step outside the classroom door.

"So, Y/N, care to explain what your smelling of the potion meant?" His smirk is on full display now. He's clearly enjoying this, whether it's just to tease you or if there's something more to it.
"Don't get your hopes up, Freddie. You stink, mate," George says, ducking from Fred's swing of his arm. "Catch you later." He runs off down the corridor, but you don't miss the meaningful look he gives Fred as he turns the corner.

"Hmm. You see, Y/N, I disagree with George. I think I smell rather nice—kind of, like, Cedar, you could say? And maybe fireworks. Hey! Come to think of it, when I'm home, it kind of smells like homemade cooking?" Fred tries but fails to hold a laugh in, chuckling away to himself.

You take a deep breath.
"Okay. Fine, Fred. What I smelt reminded me of you. Are you happy now?" you ask, shaking your head fondly.
"Oh! Very! Don't you worry," he lightly bumps into you.

Turning to look up at him, you raise an eyebrow. Surely that can't be all he has to say. However, when you reach the door to the boy's toilets, he stops.
"Gotta go wee, Y/N. We'll speak later." He winks, pushing the door open behind him. Before he goes in, though, he speaks again.
"By the way, I caught a sneaky whiff of Slughorn's potion too," he says, smiling at you. "It smelt just like you."

And without saying another word, he disappears into the toilets, leaving you standing in the middle of the corridor in shock.

Did you hear him correctly? Does this mean he returns your attraction and possible feelings? A warm, fluttery feeling comes from your stomach as you smile to yourself. Maybe it was a good thing Fred was there to hear after all.
