It is the day after your first game and you are expecting a call from your parents. You are talking to Marco and Jenna about the game. You can tell that they are a little jealous of you.
"Are you sure you will be fine?" Marco has been persistent about the fact that Ovechkin elbowed you. The concern is touching but unnecessary.
"Yes I have been elbowed before," You retort. You hear a slight giggle from Jenna but it doesn't last long. Your phone rings and you take it to your room. You answer it.
"Hello dad," You answer with a little too much enthusiasm.
"Hello Igg," Your dad responds. You can tell that he is in a good mood.
"So how did the game go?" It's a good question.
"It was fun even though it was harder than college hockey," You answer. Hopefully he doesn't pester you about being elbowed like Marco. Knowing him he probably would ask.
"I saw you got elbowed by Alex Ovechkin," Your mum remarks.
"Yes but I am fine," You quickly shut the idea down. It's a good thing that you know how to take a hit. You can feel the smile grow on your face. Your mum and dad have a quick conversation in Finish. They are talking about how happy they are to see you in one the big leagues. You hear a knock on the door.
"joka tapauksessa minun pitäisi mennä (anyway I should be going)," You break up the chatter. It's a pity that you can't talk for longer but you want to see who is at the door.
"Hyvästi pärjäile (Good by, take care)," Your dad replies. You hang up and you also grab a clutch which has some stuff for the team celebration. You head to the door but Jenna has beaten you to it. She is talking to Sidney who has come to pick you up for the team celebration. They are talking about your skill as a defenceman.
"I'm right here you know," You remark as Sidney and Jenna turn their attention to you.
"Are you ready Igg?" Sidney asks as he extends his hand to you. You hesitantly take it because you are unsure if he has a meaning behind the gesture. You glance back at Jenna who has jealousy written on her face. You leave before she can say anything.
"Sorry about that," You are a little embarrassed at the fact that Jenna was talking about you.
"Don't worry about it. It was mostly positive," Sidney tries to reassure you. After thirteen minutes of awkward silence you have made to the restaurant. The only person that has beaten you and Sidney is Jake.
"Hello cap, Igg," He acknowledges your presence by looking up from his phone.
"Hello Jake," Sidney responds. You give him a nod. The others soon follow suit with their greetings. You are feeling a little nervous for some reason. You put it down to the fact that you are this year's rookie. Hopefully they don't notice.
"Hey Igg are you alright?" Sidney asks.
"Sorry I'm just a little nervous," You respond. You can feel the redness fight its way up to your cheeks. Why can't you feel comfortable? After all they are your teammates. You all enter the restaurant. You end up being seated between Jake and Sam. You are looking at the menu so you can distract yourself from the glances that you are receiving from Sidney.
"You know Sid I still think you have a crush on Iggy," Jake announces. The remark makes Sidney get defensive.
"Jake. You do realise that calling it a crush is a little immature," You respond for Sidney. You know he could probably handle stuff like this. Even though you think it's immature the comment still brings a smile to your face. Plus it would explain some things.
"Yes but Sid isn't denying it," Jake retorts.
"I think you should change the topic," Evgeni Malkin remarks. Finally someone who is making sense. Hopefully the others agree with him.
"How about you tell us a little bit about yourself Igg?" Sam changes the topic.
"Well there isn't much to tell except for the fact that I grew up in Finland," You respond. You can't think of anything that is really important. It bothers you because you are normally able to answer the question. Sidney changes the topic again because he can tell that you are a little embarrassed. Thank goodness Sidney is good at reading the situation. The waitress soon arrives to take the team's orders. Thank goodness that that line of conversation is over for now. After a minute of the waitress scribbling down the orders she leaves.
"So Iggy what was it like growing up in Finland?" Sidney asks.
"It was nice," You respond. Ten minutes later the food has arrived and you have started nibbling on some of the food. The good thing is despite the struggle to make small talk you have enjoyed your night. After an hour of socialising with the team you are ready to leave. Sidney leads you to the car. He opens the door for you which is a little odd but you know he is trying to be polite.
"Thank you," You remark.
"Don't worry about it," Sidney responds. You start to thinking about the evening that you had with the team. Thirteen minutes later you have made it back to your house. Sidney has decided it would be a good idea to leave before you could invite him in. You place your stuff on the kitchen counter. You try to sneak up to your room but you are stopped.
"What's the deal with you and Sidney?" Marco asks.
"There is no deal between us yet," You respond. You really don't want to talk about it now.
"The key word being yet," Marco starts to tease you.
"Marco, can we continue this tomorrow," You retort. The good thing is you have some traveling to do tomorrow so he won't get a chance to. You close the door to your room. Overall it was a fun outing with the team.
