I had just woken up, feeling the anticipation of the first day of school. After getting ready, I headed downstairs where I encountered Aunt Jenna, Elena, and my baby brother Jeremy. They were sorting out cash from Aunt Jenna before she left for a presentation. Elena turned to Jeremy, concern in her voice, asking if he was okay. "Not now," Jeremy replied tersely. Elena seemed about to say something to me, but I turned and went upstairs to Jeremy's room.

"Hey, if you want, we can get stoned later," I said to Jeremy. He agreed, so I grabbed my keys and we drove to school. Upon arriving, we split up to go to our respective classes. I made my way to my locker, grabbed a can of Monster, and was about to head to class early when my name was called to go to the front office.

I entered and went straight to Miss Jackson, asking why I was summoned. She explained that I was to show the new student, Stefan Salvatore, around, as I had signed up for it before the break. I agreed and turned to Stefan, asking casually, "Hey, you're related to Zack, aren't you?" "Yeah, I am. Do you know him?" Stefan replied. "Yeah, he has joint custody over me. Anyway, let's go to your first class, which is History with Mr. Tanner. Good luck; just walk down there; it's the second door after the men's room. I'll meet you after your class."

After a gruelling day at school, Stefan mentioned he was visiting someone, so I decided to stay at Zack's place. We talked until Stefan arrived abruptly, about to say something until he noticed me. Zack reassured him, "Don't worry; Samantha already knows about vampires." I sized Stefan up and noticed Elena's diary in his possession. "Oi, loverboy, if you want to return Elena's diary, go to my house; she'll be there." "Thanks, Sam," Stefan nodded gratefully before leaving. I told Zack I was heading to the Grill to see Tyler but would be back later.

At the Grill, I found Tyler and Matt getting drinks from Vicky, Matt's sister. Despite their close ties, I couldn't help but feel she was playing my BFF Tyler and my little bro Jeremy. We played pool for an hour until Elena and Stefan walked in. Matt greeted them, leaving Tyler to tell me he loved me but had to go home to his parents. His mother's offer for me to stay with them remained open, but I was soon dragged over to sit with Elena and her friends by Stefan.

Caroline decided to give Elena a big card and gifts, claiming they were from the entire year, the cheer team, and the football team, to cheer her up after losing her parents and nearly dying herself. I lost it and turned to them, yelling, "She wasn't the only one there! I was there too! I lost my parents and nearly died twice that night! Yet, I get nothing, just the forgotten Gilbert! It's always about poor little Elena. She gets all this happiness not because she earned it, but because she stole mine!" Elena cried, and the guilt was visible on her friends' faces as I stormed out.

Stefan followed, trying to console me. He held me in a hug despite my resistance, calming me with his words and rocking motion. Eventually, I looked up, and he wiped away my tears. He asked if I wanted to talk about it, but I declined, asking him to take me to the boarding house. With his speed, he swiftly brought me there, and rather than be alone, I requested to stay with him for the night. He laid me down in his bed, gave me one of his shirts, and turned away, bidding me goodnight as I cuddled up.

The next day, I woke up warm and snug, realizing my pillow was actually Stefan. It didn't matter as I informed him I'd help him get ready for the party but needed to make sure he had the right outfit.

We ate a couple of bowls of fruit and, thanks to my efforts, felt confident in our appearance when we arrived at the party. We went our separate ways, and an hour later, I was sipping bourbon when screams echoed through the house. Rushing to Stefan, we found Vicky with a neck wound being carried away. Stefan and I exchanged a nod, backing away cautiously before speeding off to Zack's place.

Preparing for bed, a crash outside caught my attention. Running out, I saw Stefan and a rugged stranger. "What the hell, Stefan?" I exclaimed, only for the stranger to introduce himself as Damon Salvatore, Stefan's brother. "Yeah, okay, talk later or whatever. I need sleep; I can't deal with vampire crap this late at night," I grumbled, retreating to bed.
