the morning of the yule ball, i woke up, my heart hammering with excitement. jan and alfie were already awake, and thrust their christmas presents at me with ease. i pouted. "you guys! you didn't have to." jan and alfie both laughed. "of course we did!" alfie said with a smile. "you're one of us now. we love you, kat." tears welled in my eyes as i embraced my friends in a hug.

alfie had purchased me a new sparkly white hair ornament, which practically glowed against my striking black hair. jan had given me a couple books, and a bag of sweets, and i gave them both huge hugs because giving them their presents in return. by the time christmas morning was over, i was already exhausted.

my eyes sought out cedric at the breakfast table, and he grinned when he caught me eye. "hey, follow me," he whispered once he was close enough, and i took his hand with ease, letting him pull me out of the hall and outside into the snow.

"what's so important that it's taking me away from a much needed breakfast?" i teased, and cedric sighed, pulling out a small box. "here." i opened it up, spotting a beautiful white stoned necklace. i gasped. "ced! this must have been so expensive!" he smiled. "you're worth it, kat. you're worth a lot. and that's why i wanted to ask you... when we go to the ball tonight, would you mind if i took my girlfriend instead?"

i giggled. "you have a girlfriend and you didn't tell me?" cedric rolled his eyes. "c'mon, kat. will you... will you be my girlfriend?" i smiled softly at him. "of course i will, ced. one hundred percent." and he kissed me right in the middle of the snow filled courtyard, making my smile even bigger.

i took nearly hours to get ready for the ball, curling my hair to perfection, the white accessories from alfie and cedric finishing off my look beautifully. the dress hung off my body, making me look like a princess. alfie and jan both looked stunning as well, and we made sure to take a photo together before heading downstairs towards the great hall. i was tingling with excitement and nervousness.

"katherine."

i turned, seeing draco staring at me in a velvet, high collared suit. i smiled. "wow, malfoy. you look nice for once." he managed a smile at me. "so do you. um, do you think that we could talk? i-,"

"malfoy?" suddenly, cedric was behind me. "what do you want?" draco's smile immediately left his face. "nothing," he said, his clouded look appearing back in his eyes. "have a good time at the ball, katherine."

cedric stared at me in confusion as draco swept away. "why does he call you that? doesn't it bother you?" i shrugged. "it used to, but i think i'm used to it. it's fine, he's just trying to piss me off constantly. by the way, you look incredibly handsome."

cedric began to smile. "and you, kat, look stunning. i'm serious. how did i get so lucky?" he kissed me lightly on my lips so as to not ruin my makeup, and took me by the arm. "come on. champions have to enter the ball first." my stomach twinged with nervousness, but i followed after him, spotting the rest of the champions next to the door.

my mouth opened in surprise as i saw hermione perched next to krum. "hermione," i breathed, and she turned to me, a brilliant smile on her face. "you look so beautiful!" i said, and she blushed. "so do you! thanks for saying hi." she paused, glancing me up and down. "we should hang out sometime."

i grinned at her. "for sure!" but before i could say anything else, mcgonagall had ushered us into the great hall, which was decked with decorations.

the champions filed onto the ballroom floor, and my world was filled only with cedric as he spun me around and around for the first whole hour of the ball. i was out of breath by the time we exited the floor for drinks, taking a seat by the edge of the stage and i tapped my foot to the music as i sipped on some juice.

"this is a perfect night, cedric. i'm so happy." i peeked up at him with a smile, and he grinned back. "i'm glad you're having fun, kat. you look so, so gorgeous." a blush crept up on my cheeks, and a couple of boys came up to chat to cedric, taking me out of the moment. "i'm gonna use the restroom, be right back," i murmured to cedric, and he nodded.

i brushed past many people, smiling at alfie, who was being twirled around on the dance floor by her handsome date from ravenclaw. i almost bumped into pansy parkinson, who's dress was the most elegant thing i'd ever seen on her before.

"you look nice, pansy." i gave her a smile, and she furrowed her eyebrows at me. "no offense, but why are you talking to me?" the sneer that came out of her mouth led me to believe she did take offense.

"i just- no reason. i just wanted to tell you that i thought you looked nice. is that a crime?" i said, a little harsher, and pansy's frown faltered a little.

"well, thanks, i guess. you're kat, right? nice to meet you officially. i don't normally associate with hufflepuffs, so consider yourself lucky." i snorted.

what a bitch. "where's malfoy?" i asked in curiosity, peering around to catch a glance of him. pansy wrinkled her nose. "how should i know?"

i stared at her in surprise. "because he's your boyfriend?" pansy let out a laugh. "i'm not sure where you heard that information, because it's definitely not true. malfoy and i haven't been together in ages. he's a prat. anyway, i got to go. nice to... meet you." she swept away, leaving me in very deep confusion.

oh well. i exited the hall, heading down through the darkened, empty hallway towards the bathrooms, when suddenly a shape stepped out in front of me.

"draco?" i asked in surprise. he stared at me, his eyes floating down and observing my dress. "hi, katherine." i grinned. "are you ever gonna get rid of that name? you could call me by my nickname, you know. you might not consider us friends, but i do."

draco rolled his eyes. "we aren't friends, katherine. and i don't want to be." i frowned. "jeez, malfoy. way to let me down easy. if you don't want to be friends with me, why do you even talk to me? also... why'd you lie to me about pansy?"

draco stared at me in shock. "huh?"

"you heard me." i put my hand on my hip, staring at him. the hallway was darkened, and i could barely make out the visible shape of him in the darkness. "why'd you lie to me? what was the point? did she reject you or what?"

there was a pause. "she didn't reject me." draco's voice was clouded as per usual, and i was used to it at this point. "i didn't ask her."

i stared at him in surprise. "what was the point of my help if you didn't even ask her?" draco stared at me. "i... just wanted to hang out with you, i guess. why do you ask so many fucking questions, katherine?" he rubbed his temples with his hands, and my heart throbbed. "i thought you didn't want to be friends with me, draco? can you make up your fucking mind? you're so confusing and all i've done is try my best to be nice to you, no matter how much of a prick you were back to me." my voice was raised with anger, and draco's eyes peered at me through the darkness.

"i don't want to be your friend." his voice was cold.

"well, then leave me the fuck alone." my voice was cold back, and i stormed past him, before he grabbed the back of my dress, whipping me around and pressing me against the stone wall before i could react. suddenly, his lips were on mine, and i forgot everything that had just happened as his hands rushed through my hair, gripping it tightly, but i didn't mind the pain. his lips were tearing against mine so hard that i could barely react.

my hands fluttered up to push him off, but he grabbed them in his hands, pinning me harder against the wall, and i gave in. i knew nothing about him, and yet, here i was, kissing him with everything that i had in me, so much that my lips were beginning to grow sore. my world was falling apart, my brain raced with a million questions, but it wasn't the time to answer them. right now the only thing that mattered was being in this moment.

"what the actual fuck?"
