"Have a nice day." Virgil waved out the customer as they left the shop, before sighing.
It was 10am, and he was already feeling dead inside. He started stacking cups, tapping his foot along to the song that was playing on the shop's radio. It wasn't long before the bell rang again, signalling the arrival of another customer. This was followed with the fairly loud clacking of high-heels. Without really paying attention, he turned around.
"Welcome to the Rainy Day Coffee Shop, may I take your order?" His fringe covered most of his face, so he couldn't see the person very well.
"Hey, cutie," the stranger said.
The remark took Virgil off guard, and he blinked a couple times before looking up to see who it was. A fairly tall boy stood there staring down at him - he had wavy, reddish-brown hair, and dark brown eyes. He wore a white jacket with red accents and a gold zipper; on the pocket there was a golden crown pin. He wore a brown leather belt with a gold buckle that matched his jacket, and grey jeans. Virgil couldn't see his feet past the counter, though the clacking as he walked in made him assume he was wearing some form of heels.
"Excuse me?" Virgil growled.
The stranger raised an eyebrow, smirking, before gazing up at the menu.
"I'll have a cappuccino with cream and cinnamon, please." he sighed, looking at his red-painted nails.
"And your name?" Virgil glanced away.
"Roman Prince." The stranger flicked his hair out of his eyes.
Virgil got to work making the coffee, not saying a word. He was desperately trying not to make eye contact with the stranger, hoping for the first time in his life that Remy would come in to create a distraction.
The stranger spoke again, "What's your name, cutie?"
"Um, Virgil." He mumbled, trying to make the coffee faster.
"You come here often?" he leaned on the counter, ruffling his hair.
"I mean, I work here..." Virgil shrugged.
"Right, right. Sorry." the stranger flushed a little before looking out the window.
Virgil handed him the finished coffee, mumbling the price and sheepishly taking the cash.
"Thanks, cutie." the stranger said.
Virgil glanced up and their eyes met. He didn't really like direct eye contact, so he'd never got a good look at the stranger's face. But now, as he gazed into his dark eyes, Virgil could finally appreciate how attractive the stranger was. Though their eyes only met for a split second, it made Virgil blush. Despite his best efforts to cover his face with his fringe, the stranger noticed and grinned.
"Catch ya later," he winked before strolling out of the shop, coffee in hand. Virgil took the time to appreciate his expensive-looking beige boots that clacked loudly on the ground as he walked out.
Trying desperately to stop blushing, Virgil continued stacking cups. Why had that interaction shaken him up so much? It was just a douchebag college kid, he was sure. He'd never seen him around before, though he seemed far too upper-class for this neighborhood. Who did this guy think he was, speaking to him in such a forward way? It was his fault Virgil was feeling uncomfortable, obviously. And yet he kept replaying the interaction his mind mind over and over again..."Uh, excuse me?" A voice said, bringing him back from his thoughts.
He nearly dropped the cups as he span around, "Y-yeah?"
It was the other employee, gazing at him with a confused expression. Virgil scrambled to look at his watch - 11:04.
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry..." he mumbled anxiously, fumbling to undo his apron as he scurried out of the shop.
How did he lose track of time like that? He could have sworn it had only just turned 10...
Dismissing the anxiety from his head, he decided he would go and grab donuts before heading back to his apartment to do homework. He flipped up his hood against the chilly air and headed to the Bakery.***
"Hello, and welcome to the Happy Hippo- Oh it's you!" The employee said.
It was the same guy as yesterday, with the blonde hair and circular glasses - Virgil tried to remember his name.
"Hey, it's Patton, right?" Virgil cracked a small smile, flipping down his hood. The boy's warm expression made him feel more relaxed, taking the edge off his anxiety just a little.
"Yeah! And you're Virgil!" Patton grinned, "I remember you because you have such a funky name!"
Virgil chucked a little despite himself, and ordered a donut.
"So, do you live around here?" The employee asked as he packaged the donut.
"Yeah, I live a couple blocks away." Virgil fished for change in his wallet, "You?"
"Yeah, I live with my Dad and brother just downtown." Patton smiled as he passed over the paper bag, "See you again sometime!"
"Bye." Virgil handed over the cash before heading out of the shop. He put on his headphones yet again and played some random music, his mind distracted. He couldn't stop thinking about that guy at the Coffee Shop. It didn't make any sense; Virgil knew he was gay, but he'd never been THIS gay. It was just an attractive douchebag, nothing worth stressing over. And yet his mind kept coming back to it. He found himself hoping that the stranger would come back to the shop tomorrow, and they day after that, and the day after that...
Virgil frowned. It didn't matter, anyway. He had to concentrate on his schoolwork, remember? He wanted to become a web manager, to prove to his parents and stuck up brother that he can do whatever he wants with his life. Being gay was what pushed him away from them in the first place, the last thing he wanted was for it to stop him from proving them wrong.
