Oh Lan Zhan! Don't you know that your Wei Ying is such a clever little bunny! This has been the most difficult chapter for me to write so far so I hope you like it. All credit goes to Mo Xiang Tong Xiu author of Mo Dao Zu Shi! Photo credit goes to the donghua series Mo Dao Zu Shi.
My song list this chapter is simply the entire beautiful soundtrack for The Untamed. It usually evokes either happy tears or ugly sad crying when I listen to it. LOL Thanks for reading everyone and I hope you enjoy!
Wei Wuxian waited with unbridled anticipation for Lan Zhan to wake up. He had known from the start that Lan Wangji was trying to get him drunk with the Emperor's Smile so he would tell him about the missing two years. For a short moment, he was willing to play along. But, hundreds of questions rolled around in his head that needed to be answered. Of course, all of them seemed important, but he knew there was only one question he really wanted to know the answer to. Before he could decide on which question to ask first, Lan Zhan opened his eyes and awkwardly sat up.
"Lan Zhan." Wei Ying whispered, his entire body tingling with excitement.
"Mn."
"It's time to play our game of questions. I ask, you answer. Ok? Are you ready?"
"Then fun?"
Wei Ying had to smile at that response. "Yes, then we can have some fun."
"Mn."
Wei Ying turned so he could look at Lan Zhan's face and suddenly stopped short. Those hypnotic golden eyes were staring at him with unconditional trust, unblinking, and Wei Ying forgot to take his next breath.
What was happening to him? His stomach twisted inside his body and it became almost impossible to swallow. He could hear his heart beating in his ears and his only desire in that moment was to protect. Protect his Lan Zhan. But protect him from what? Or who?
Wei Ying had to look away or be lost forever in that spellbinding gaze. He took a deep breath, shook his head, and composed his thoughts.
"Uh, Lan Zhan, did you miss me while I was gone?
"Mn."
Well, that wasn't an overly exciting response, Wei Ying thought to himself. He would have to try something else. He rested his elbow on the table and placed his chin in the palm of his hand, gently rubbing his nose.
"Are you happy that I'm back in Gusu?" he asked hopefully.
"Mn."
Hmmm. This wasn't exactly what Wei Ying was hoping for. He knew that Lan Zhan was a one word answer kind of guy so he wasn't completely surprised. He supposed he would have to ask different questions if he wanted to get better answers. So, he thought about what he truly wanted to ask Lan Zhan, what his heart really wanted to know.
"Lan Zhan," Wei Ying said softly. "If you could do it all again, would you still want to be my friend?" He could already feel sadness touching his heart and a lump forming in his throat. His tense eyes searched Lan Zhan's face for any kind of movement.
Lan Zhan leaned closer to Wei Ying's face until they were almost nose to nose. Then spoke that one word that Wei Ying had been aching to hear.
"Yes." Lan Zhan's voice was deep and doubtless.
Wei Ying felt relief wash over him, but it was quickly replaced with disbelief at Lan Zhan's answer. He had to know more. He couldn't stop now.
"Why?" he asked, his voice cracking.
Why would this man who was the top cultivator of all the sects, who was known to follow every Gusu rule without question, and whose reputation of upholding justice was known by every person in the land want to be HIS friend? After everything they had been through, everything Wei Ying had put him through, why would Lan Zhan still want to be by his side?
Lan Zhan answered slowly, "You're my.....only......equal. You make me...... better."
Giant tears threatened to fall from Wei Ying's blurring eyes and he had to take a few quick, hard blinks to silently wipe them away. 'Maybe I really have had too much to drink.' he thought, smiling to himself. 'I should stop before Lan Zhan wakes up'.
But, of course, that didn't happen.
"Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan. Why did you kiss me?" A cunning grin surfaced across his lips.
Lan Zhan's face took on a frustrated look as his head cocked down and to the side just the tiniest bit, but he didn't answer Wei Ying's question.
Wei Ying tried again. "Shouldn't you want to kiss girls?" he said, his bunny smile appearing as a little giggle escaped his throat.
But, Lan Zhan just kept staring at him as if he should already know the answer.
Wei Ying was starting to lose interest in this game. It wasn't any fun if Lan Zhan was no longer going to answer his questions. But, Wei Wuxian had more questions that itched at the back of his brain, demanding to be heard.
Placing both his hands flat on the table and pushing up onto his knees, he asked "Have you kissed anyone else besides me? While I was gone? Before you met me?" The inquiries kept coming but Wei Ying suddenly realized that he didn't really want to know the answers to them. Unfortunately, it was too late to take them back.
"No." Lan Zhan answered simply.
Wei Ying once again felt immense relief upon hearing one word. He enjoyed that feeling for a second before confusion started to mix with it. Why am I so damn happy that Lan Zhan has never kissed anyone but me? Am I going insane?! We're both men! Men don't feel this way about each other! But' he wondered.....'if two men COULD be like that with one other, would Lan Zhan want to be like that with ME?'
Wei Ying's next question quickly popped into his head and, before he could stop himself, the words spilled out. "Lan Zhan, do you want to get married someday?"
Lan Zhan's face lit up and the tiniest of smiles touched his soft lips. "Mn."
Wei Ying's head cocked forward in surprise and his jaw dropped. HUH? Lan Zhan wanted to get married? Had he thought about this before? Wei Ying just couldn't picture Lan Zhan with a wife and maybe even....
"Do you want a family?" he blurted out. Wei Ying clasped his hand over his mouth to stop anymore crazy questions from spewing from his lips.
Lan Zhan's gaze melted like snow in the spring and, staring deep into Wei Ying's bewitching grey eyes, answered lovingly, "Already have one."
Wei Ying's heart swelled in his chest and felt like it would float away like a lantern released into the sky. There was only one more question he wanted to ask Lan Zhan.
"Do you want to kiss me again?"
