Trigger warning(s): swearing
Patton texted Virgil frequently, mostly about homework or other school matters. Occasionally he would ask to hangout, but Virgil always turned him down. Making up excuses about being busy and not having time. Patton slumped against the headboard of his bed. Virgil had turned him down again. He sat back up, tapping away at his phone.
You: Am I annoying you?
No he can't say that.
You: how come?
No he would probably just say he's busy.
You: is something wrong?
He pressed send, screwing his eyes shut. He bit his lip, waiting for a reply.
Virgil💜: what do you mean?
You: did I do something?
You: it feels like you're avoiding me...Virgil cursed under his breath, running a hand through his dark hair. He typed for a long time, writing and rewriting his reply until he finally settled on an answer.
You: Patton, I like you alot. I really do. I'm having a rough time right now and I don't want you to get caught up in it. please forgive me.
Patton is typing...

Virgil glanced down at the address on his phone, rocking on his heels. Yep, this is the right place. It had been over a week since that talk with Patton, and neither of them had brought it up since. Virgil tried his best to forget about it, finally working up the courage to invite Patton out after school. Definitely not for a date. Definitely not. Totally platonic. No romantic feelings here.Patton was over the moon about hanging out with Virgil. Finally! He threw on a soft baby blue hoodie with a kitten on the front, along with a pair of jeans with little stars and hearts painted on them. He bounced down the chilled street, his hands flapping at his sides excitedly. He had a huge goofy grin plastered on his face, practically skipping as he rounded the corner towards the small café. He hummed a quiet tune to himself. He spotted Virgil near the entrance, his smile growing ever wider. He sped up his pace, giggling softly.
"Virgil!" He exclaimed, wrapping his arms around the smaller boy's neck. Virgil stiffened for a minute before relaxing into the embrace, resting his head into Patton's neck. The taller boy released, slipping his hand into the other's and walking into the café. They chose a table near the back, Virgil pulling his knees to his chest on the chair. Patton spared a concerned glance, taking his hand again and squeezing it. Virgil nodded, assuring the other that he was okay.
"You want anything? One squeeze for no, two for yes," Patton asked, practically laying across the table to hold Virgil's hand. He hesitated, his eyes darting around before he squeezed the boy's hand twice. The taller nodded, a soft smile on his face. "Do you wanna come with me and pick or do you wanna write it down?" The timid boy stood up in response, silently wrapping his arms around Patton's waist. The peppy boy smiled, resting his head on top of his dark hair. They stayed that way, savoring the presence of each other. Patton forgot about their drinks. He forgot about the other customers around them. He only thought of the boy in his arms. The strange silent boy.

Virgil glanced at his phone for the millionth time, watching the minutes tick by. 9:37 pm. Patton sat next to him as the ambient sounds of the bus wailed around them, his arm slung on the back of their seats. He chewed the inside of his mouth, his leg bouncing restlessly. Patton gave him the okay sign, a concerned look on his face. Virgil nodded, swallowing hard. He blinked fast, his breathing quickening with every passing minute. He sucked in a breath and typed a quick message on his phone, passing it to the other boy.
Can I stay with you tonight?
Patton tentatively rubbed his back. "Of course Vee! But...don't you need clothes?" Virgil shook his head hard, his eyes wide. "Okay okay no need to worry!" He pulled him into a tight hug, rubbing his back. "I'll keep you safe," The smaller nodded into his chest.
