Sunday morning, she wakes up to do her usual work in the field. She gets her farm gear on and was about to get working outside when Patty, stopped her. "Eat ya break'fast, or y'all starve out there"
"'kay Ma! Mmmm......Sausage and eggs?"
"Don't forget pancakes, girl. Y'all need your strength to milk Betty and Anna out there"
"I know, Betty, tried to kick me out last time," Linda says, remembering the last time she tried and Betty made a huge fuss. That cow has the temper of a city girl. Anne was a sweetheart unlike Betty, made milking one of 'em easier. After grabbing a bite to eat, Lindy went to do her normal duties.
"Betty, you bein' a bit stubborn. Now Ma said, ya won't cooperate with me so. How 'bout some music to soothe ya sorrows?"
After quite some time of choosing the best one to milk her, Betty finally cooperates. Completing more chores, she gets to the last on her list, buy fertilizers from the local market. Opening the door, she greets the store manager, in his 80s, who has always been there, with a smile.
"Hey, Mr. Cooper! Ya have any fertilizers?"
"It'd be in back, Lindy. They are quite big. Ya need some help, let me know. I was an in the Army"
"Thank you, Mr. Cooper. But I'm pretty strong and I don't want you to be tired out...Thanks anyway" Responding that she goes to the back of the store and sees the favorite brand of Patty's. George's Fertilizers helped grow most of the vegetables on the farm. If she were asked which brand would be best she would recommend George's in a heartbeat. Mr. Cooper fought in World War II, and lost one of his legs but was able get an fakeone at the hospital. His wife Mary begged until he finally agreed to replace his leg with an artificial one.
With the Fertilizer in hand, Lindy gets back home around the time the sun has almost gone. "School tomorrow" She sighs the word, always being threatened for being a farmhand. Putting the Fertilizer in the storage, she walks inside the house looking for Patty. "Mom! I'm home"
The whole house is calm, the stillness making her a bit anxious. Calmer than usual. Lindy goes up the stairs in search of Patty. She opens the first door, no patty. Second door, Still no Patty. Finally she opens the last door to left, and there resting in the bed is Patty, not breathing. Pale as a bone. Patty, whos now dead is taken away to be cremated and buried. Getting used to idea that someone is not there anymore is hard even for Lindy. She took a few weeks off from school to adjust to this new idea.
The last day of the week came, and there so many letters stuffed into the front part of the door. Linda taking them out opens the door and gets inside. Sitting by the fireplace, she begins:
"Dear Linda,
This may come as a shock to you but you are my granddaughter. I have sent you my trusted Butler, well your Butler, James to your location. He should have arrived by the time your reading this letter. I am in London, awaiting your arrival. we will discuss more in person.
See you soon,
Grandpa Silas Mark"
Outside there is a knock. Putting the letter aside, she goes to get the door. "Miss Mark? Linda Mark"
"Ya, That'd be me, I guess. Are you the one sent by my.... It's really ashamed to say"
"James Stewert, A pleasure to meet you. I'll be serving you, Miss Marks"
After he explains a few things, Linda who has no choice decides to leave the country home and move permanently to London.
She never thought she'd move to a posh country. "Is London, all that great? I mean, I don't see why it's so grand when people say it in the television"
"Curious, are we miss Marks? In my opinion, it is both grand and overwhelming"
"Just call me, Lindy, Mister Stewert"
"And Call me James, Lindy," He says still focusing on the road ahead. "Ah, here we are, Willow Estate"
The car pulled up to a very grand and large looking building. Lindy couldn't help but gaze at it with awe. James quickly got everything from the trunk and guided a very surprised Linda inside. So many paintings and other trinkets lined the walls. Maids and butlers were moving very speedily. Wearing only a sleeved sweatshirt and jeans, dirt on her face she stood there admiring everything inside Willow Estate. "Willow Estate," she says in a whispery voice.
Some of the maids were smiling or rather laughing at her outfit, or mostly figuring out her story. She was led to a drawing-room, by one of the butlers who were available at the moment. The beauty of the inside almost outshines the farmhouse she had been living in all these years. James was already up the stairs when he glanced back. He called out, "Miss Lindy? Are not excited to see your chambers?"
James rephrased his question, "Your room, miss Lindy?"
"Sure, James. I'm sure damn excited to see it" she replied, whipping her hands like she always does. Grand staircases adorned with the gold led them to the first floor. James stopped and put her luggage nearby the room. She halted next to him as he emptied the door to her very own bedroom.
What she saw, made her stunned. "Lindy?"
Lindy was busy admiring her room. A desk, a fireplace, a sofa of her own... And even a beautiful bed. She approached the bed, sceptical at first. Slowly she lowered herself onto it. Soft silk sheets. The mattress felt like heaven and so she put her feet up and propped her head down. The ceiling was like something out of a Michel Angelo painting, but it twice as luxurious. James was watching her from where he stood. Not moving a muscle.
Her eyes started to close, and a yawn ran out from her. "If you choose to sleep it off, you can, Lindy"
"Goodnight" she replied, sleepily. After James left, she off to her dream land.
