I struggled to open my eyes. My body felt heavy, like every part of me was being dragged downwards.
All I could see was bright white, and I didn't have a clue where I was or what was happening.
It was easier to just let my eyes stay closed.
Hours passed before I slipped back into semi-consciousness, and I tried once again to open my eyes and look around.
The bleariness slowly faded, and... Fluorescents.
The blindness I felt earlier had been the harsh lighting in a hospital.
My eyes somewhat adjusted but the lights still made my head pound. Well, a combination of the lights and a concussion.
I immediately tried to sit upright, but pain shot through my entire body, freezing me the way I was.
"Hello?" My throat was sore and dry, and it was more of a croak than actual speech. I had the horrible urge to cough, causing more sharp pain to spread over my ribs. I winced, having a coughing fit did not pair well with what felt like a full body of bruises.
"Hold on, hold on, it's okay, I'm right here," A flurry of footsteps accompanied the comforting words.
A doctor rushed towards me, smiling warmly as he arrived at my bedside. He helped to support me as I sat up, and handed me a little plastic cup.
I sipped the water, trying not to choke and make it even worse.
"Thanks," I almost sighed in relief after downing the water.
"You're very welcome (y/n). It's so good to see you awake and talking! You worried us all a lot." The doctor spoke in a very quiet, soothing manner, and his voice was soft enough to make me immediately feel calmer.
"What happened?" I still didn't have the faintest idea where I was or why everything hurt so much. I barely even knew who I was.
"Unfortunately, we were hoping you'd be able to give us more insight. You were found in the middle of the woods, battered and bruised all over and completely out cold," a look of concern graced the doctor's face.
Inconvenient and inappropriate as it was, this was the moment that I realised he was pretty. And I mean, inhumanly pretty; even with such a worried expression. He had flawless porcelain skin, eyes that seemed to glint with gold, and perfectly styled blond hair. He looked like an illustration from a fantasy storybook.
"(y/n)? Are you hearing me okay?"
My heart jumped and I snapped back to the real world, embarrassed to realise I had spaced out while admiring him.
"Oh! Um... Sorry. I don't think I'm all awake yet,"
"That's perfectly okay, I just asked you if you know where you are. We'll need to do more tests to check your memory, but if you don't know, then I'm sure it will be a comfort to find out." He smiled again, clipboard in hand, waiting for my response.
"Y-yeah... I have no idea what happened, or where I am, or anything. All I know right now is myself... It feels like someone completely wiped my brain. And it hurt. A lot."
"Okay, we can work on helping you with that. My name is Dr. Cullen, I and your lovely nurses have been looking after you since you were admitted. This is the Forks Hospital, and you've been here for two weeks. You've woken up a few times but never for more than a minute or so, and you haven't spoken or moved much until today." He paused, as if giving me time to soak it all in.
"Two weeks...?" I didn't want to believe it.
He nodded sympathetically, before continuing. "Your ID was with you when you were found, so we could get some of your details but we weren't able to get into contact with anybody, are you aware of any family or friends that we should reach out to?"
I thought long and hard, to no avail. Tears welled in my eyes as the realisation hit me. I couldn't remember anything; I was completely alone. What if I had family looking for me? What if-
Dr. Cullen handed me a tissue and sat on the chair next to my bed. He leaned in towards me and spoke in a low, whisper-soft voice. "Hey, (y/n)... Sometimes it just takes a little while for the memories to fill in. There isn't any pressure, we're here to help you, try to be patient and we'll figure it out in time." He placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder, and I dabbed at my eyes with the tissue.
His words helped a lot, but I still struggled to stop crying. I just felt so weak and scared. Dr. Cullen's presence was the only safety I felt.
I looked over at him, and he gave me that kind smile again. I knew everything was going to be okay.
