Carlisle was immediately by my side, a slight look of shock on his face. "I'll call the Chief."
He stayed by me as he took the phone call, and he waited with me until Chief Swan arrived.
When the Chief arrived, I told him as much as I could, and he looked for any possible leads. He noted down that my TV and a few other small items had been stolen, and assured me I would be compensated.
Carlisle must have noticed my overwhelming worry, as he once again put a reassuring arm around me. "Come on, let's go outside."
He led me outside, where the air had become crisp with the night. We sat on the doorstep in silence for a while.
The cool breeze helped me to collect my thoughts and calm down a little bit.
"I don't know what to do now. Being here doesn't feel safe."
Carlisle smiled sympathetically.
"Well... You aren't going to be staying here tonight." He gestured to his car. "You're more than welcome to spend the night with my family and I."
My face burned hot at his suggestion. "I'd feel way too rude... I'll just get a hotel or something, I'll be okay."
"(y/n). Unless you're really that uncomfortable, I insist." He arose, holding his hand out to help me up.
My nerves stirred me up so badly that the entire car ride was just a blur in my memory, and before I knew it, we had arrived outside the Cullen residence.
I admired the large, modern house, tucked away in the trees. Was Carlisle really okay with this? I tried not to let my mind wander too much.
Carlisle led me inside, where I was met by a sizeable group of people; his family. He called them to attention and explained that I was a former patient of his, that I'd been robbed, and needed somewhere safe to stay for the time being.
They all greeted me kindly, two women in particular were extremely friendly, hugging me and introducing themselves as Esme and Alice, respectively Carlisle's sister and adopted daughter.
I'd heard about his family before, but this welcoming party still left me looking a little bit shocked.
A woman sat on a couch across the room, a beautiful blonde curled up in the arms of a man (who I could only assume was her partner), piped up, telling them to let me breathe.
Carlisle gently pulled me out of the chaos, laughing warmly. He introduced me to everyone properly, and as nice as they seemed, it still tugged at my mind that such a young, carefree guy had adopted an entire family. There had to be something more to this; from what I could see, Carlisle didn't have a wife, or even a partner.
He moved to show me the room I'd be staying, and in that exact moment, the front door opened, another group of people being added to the mix.
They were quickly introduced as Edward – another adopted son – and his wife, Bella. Following them was their child, Renesmee, and Jacob, who was...her babysitter? At least, that's how I understood their explanation.
Dr. Cullen once again explained my situation, and Edward nodded intently. He looked like he was stifling a smirk, as if he knew something I didn't. Carlisle shot him a glance and ushered him off into the living room. Bella gave me an awkward wave before turning to join the others.
Carlisle led me into a spare room, it was airy and spacious, with large windows to show off the dusky forest view. He approached the cosy-looking couch that sat against one wall, revealing it to be a pull-out bed.
"Wait here."
He left the room for a minute or so, returning with a bundle of blankets heaped up in his arms.
"What sort of host would I be if I let my guest get cold in the night?" He smoothed the blankets over the bed. "There, much better. You should probably get some rest now, its been a crazy day for you."
All I could do was nod, I was overwhelmed with appreciation, but I was also exceedingly exhausted, and the nest that Carlisle had made for me was too inviting to resist.
"Thank you so much..."
"Don't even mention it, it's the least I could do." He pulled me into another embrace, like the one that had stuck with me days before. Every worry that I had, just melted away like butter; all I could think about was him.
"Goodnight, (y/n), sleep well." He released me gently, flicking the light off and pulling the door shut on his way out.
"Goodnight Carlisle..."
