The next morning I woke up early to freshen up and make sure I had all my things gathered. I went through my final check-ups with one of the nurses, checked out and started to make my way outside.
In the corridor, I bumped into Carlisle, walking the opposite direction. He put his hand on my shoulder to stop me. "Are you leaving already?"
"Yeah... I just checked out. They couldn't find you to do my final checks so one of the nurses took over."
"I had something to take care of this morning." Carlisle sighed and looked at me with disapproval. "How were you planning on getting home?"
I shrugged, "It isn't far, I was just going to walk. I'm sure I can find it just fine."
"Not happening. Just let me sort these files out and I'll meet you outside." He smiled and patted me on the shoulder before continuing down the hall.
It was overcast and looked like rain was going to start any second. I leaned against a wall and sighed. He was such a kind person. I started planning ways to show my gratitude without coming across as weird. Maybe I could get him flowers or something nice like that?
I wondered what sort of things Carlisle liked to do in his free time. I started to conjure up a scenario in my head where we were together, just relaxing in each other's company; talking and laughing. I smiled to myself, as I let myself get caught up in my sweet daydream.
"Hey (y/n)! Are you ready to go?" Carlisle waved as he walked towards me.
I waved back, hoping he wouldn't see how badly I was blushing. "Hey Carlisle, yeah, I'm ready."
We walked around to the staff parking lot and got into his Mercedes, just how we would when we left for the forest.
He started up the engine and started the drive to my apartment. I looked straight out of the window, as always, in an attempt to avoid the fluttery feeling in my stomach that I got whenever I looked at Carlisle. It never worked.
The rain finally started to pour, pattering down onto the windshield. "Good timing," Carlisle said softly, switching on the wipers.
I swear I could've fallen asleep right there in the passenger seat, listening to the smooth purr of the engine, the soothing sounds of rain, and the gentle beating as the wipers swayed back and forth. It didn't help that Carlisle had the most relaxing presence; I felt like I really was safe whenever I was near him.
After some minutes had passed, I recognised the scenery outside from the photographs I'd been shown. We were pulling up to my place now.
The rain slowed to a drizzle as Carlisle parked the car. I thanked him shyly and got out, closing the door, and taking the first few steps towards the entrance of the building.
I expected to hear the engine start up again, but instead I heard the door being opened on the driver's side, and rustling sounds. I turned around to see Carlisle behind me, holding my bag.
"I think you forgot something," he smiled, causing my heart to skip a beat.
"Thank you..." I blushed and took my bag, "I guess this is goodbye then."
"Don't be such a stranger, (y/n)." Carlisle pulled me into a close embrace. "I'll see you soon, just give me a call whenever."
I was so close to him... Everything about him intoxicated me, the fabric of his jacket against my face, the smell of his cologne, hearing his soft voice reverberate through his chest. If I had a choice, I would've stayed in that moment forever.
He softened his hold on me, smiled once more, and returned to his car, leaving me on my doorstep with my head spinning. I felt so dizzy and warm that I didn't realise that he'd told me to call him. I didn't even have a phone.
After he left, I took a deep breath and went up to my flat.
I unlocked the door and took one last moment to prepare myself. This was it; I was going to be living again. Alone.
The door swung open, and for – what felt like – the first time, I took in the little apartment around me. It seemed fairly basic, not many decorations, clean. Thank god. I knew that Police Chief Swan and Dr. Cullen had both seen my flat, and if it was a cluttered mess I would've been mortified.
The first room I saw was the living room. The walls were painted a deep, wine-red shade; definitely a strange colour choice, but it did somehow work with the rest of the room.
There was a white leather sofa pushed against one wall, a decent-sized TV mounted on the opposing wall, and in the centre was a glass top coffee table, scattered with a couple coasters and a book.
The kitchen was a tiny, open plan sort – only separated from the living room by a wide hallway and cute little island table paired with two cushioned stools. I hoped to God that there wasn't anything nasty in the fridge.
Each side of the hallway had a door along its length; for the bathroom and bedroom, I assumed.
I inspected the room a little more, familiarising myself (a.k.a. confirming that the fridge was, indeed, empty), before opening the door to the left.
Behind the door was a small bathroom, nothing much to note there. That left one more room to check.
I opened my bedroom door and dropped my bag onto the bed, which was neatly made with simply patterned bedclothes. Much like the rest of the apartment, my room was free of clutter, with a desk to one wall, and a dresser against the other. To my delight, the dresser was stocked full of clothes; I could finally wear something I actually liked.
Rummaging through my dresser reminded me that I had stuff to unpack. I tipped the carrier bag up, and the contents piled onto my bed.
After putting away most of the clothing, I reached for the last shirt, and felt something hard. Confused, I unravelled the shirt.
Wrapped up in the shirt was none other than a mobile phone and charger. The latest model at that.
"You didn't..." I whispered to myself, clutching the phone to my chest.
I switched the mobile on, maybe Carlisle accidentally dropped his phone in with my stuff?
However this was no mistake. In fact, this was very deliberate. The home screen had been set to a gorgeous photo of the forest, and some quick snooping revealed Carlisle had saved his details in the contacts, along with a little note:
"I thought you'd be needing one of these. I hope you settle in well! Looking forward to your call :) – Carlisle"
I fell back onto my bed, a huge smile on my face. I was definitely going to get him flowers.
