PHEW! This one took a LOT longer than I expected, and it ended up being a lot longer than I expected. Here's one-shot number three, the longest one to date. T-minus one day to my birthday, hahaha!
This one was requested by SenzuWeed
I hope you enjoy this! Once again, sorry it took so long!
--Y/N POV--
I grunted as I sat down on a log, warming up to the nearby campfire, staring disdainfully at the unsightly bowl of stew and bear meat in my hands. Be Corrin's retainer, they said. A life of luxury, they said. I guess I shouldn't complain... I did get in on a lot of that action that I was looking for when I became a knight. That's how I started, you see- a sniveling, weak boy who couldn't even hold a sword right. My captain quickly made a man out of me, though. I grew addicted to the thrill of battle- the rush of adrenaline that ran through my veins as I dodged spears, arrows and the like, combined with the crisp, fresh smell of the open air.
From then on, I rose in the ranks. Became one of King Garon's most trusted knights. Eventually, he asked me to become the retainer of prince Corrin as he embarked on his journey to defeat the opposing kingdom, Hoshido.
Life was hard, but to say it was not without its merits would be a flat-out lie. The constant fighting was good exercise, and I had made quite a few friends among the other retainers of the Nohrian royals.
Well... where one makes friends, one must also make enemies and rivals...
And nobody was more mind-numbingly annoying than Xander's female retainer, Peri. I knew she would be a problem from that time we first met.
Me and Prince Corrin were fighting off a Hoshidan patrol that had stumbled upon us when, out of the blue, she appeared, swiftly stabbing the soldier I was fighting with a spear and sending me a confident, smug smirk.
I was too dumbstruck to say anything. Then she looked into my eyes, smiled again, and said, "What's the matter, cat got your tongue?"
I couldn't even come up with some form of comeback! That was what irked me the most. Thousands of them came flowing through my head the second the moment passed. It was enough to make me want to throw my sword on the ground in frustration, and tear my hair out, something I definitely would've done if Prince Corrin wasn't standing right there.
From then on, whenever we met, we would have a silent, mutually understood competition. Whoever could kill the most Hoshidan soldiers would win. Sure, it may have been a bit sadistic, but that didn't stop me from trying my hardest to take that grin off her face.
Most of the other retainers, and even one or two of the royals eventually noticed our little contest. Our love for battle and murder had earned me and Peri the nickname "Wild Things." Personally, I couldn't stand to be associated her in any way, but the name stuck, and there was nothing I could do about it.
Little did I know how much tomorrow would bring. The day that would change everything for me, the day I would learn how much of a significance Peri would start to have in my life.
That day started out like all others. I woke up feeling sore all over, grumpy as can be. This wasn't something new, I had never been a morning person, never would be.
Corrin and Xander had teamed up to try and track the movements of the Hoshidan army. Which meant that she was here.
I leant against a tree to rest for a second and wake myself up when my ears picked up the sound of a tent flap opening, followed by a yawn.
I could recognize that voice anywhere. What was she doing up this early?!?! Was it only to spite me?
As was expected, she walked over and sat down next to me, cleaning her lance. She stared at it lustfully, consumed in her own world.
