Emily's picture on the side>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Chapter 3
Lizzy
I looked at him stunned. In all my thoughts I didn't picture him like that. He was gorgeous with dimples, dark hair, and hazel eyes. Right under his left eye, he had a scar. Suddenly I remembered what Emily said about not staring. I looked away embarrassed, I wonder how he got that scar. I wonder if he would ever tell me, or maybe one of his team members knows the story.
"Are you going to stay quiet like that, or will you finally introduce yourself?"
It was as if I was slapped. I knew he was right, I should introduce myself properly, but did he have to make his point in the rudest way possible?!
I swallowed quickly.
"Good afternoon sir, my name is Elizabeth wittsman, but my friends call me Lizzy for short. I'm a fresh graduate; I really hope to join your team. I'm hardworking, persistent, and I always get the job done." I smiled at him.
"Are you creative?"
"Yes"
"Then why are you applying as a personal assistant?"
At that comment I raised an eyebrow. Is this guy for real?
"Why, do you have an opening for me to work as an advertiser for your team you're willing to offer me?"
I took a deep breath. Emily tensed beside me. Mr. Jerk looked at me surprised. Then the corner of his lips was tugged into almost a smile, and at that moment, I could tell that no one had ever talked back to him before. Well there is a first time for everything. I'm not going to be rude, but I'm not going to be a door mat for him either.
"Very well, your résumé looks great. I see you have good computer skills, you seem like you can handle it. You are qualified to work for me. Can you start tomorrow?"
"Yes, of course"
"Good, Emily please take Miss wittsman to the human resources. They will explain all the job qualities, regulation, and salary. See you tomorrow at 8, and when I say 8".
We started to walk to the door when he suddenly interrupted us, "one more thing, Miss wittsman, I don't like to be here before my assistant. When I walk into the office I expect to see you out there on your desk awaiting my arrival. So when I say 8, I mean it. Don't bother coming if you will be late. I come at 8:05". With that he started typing on the computer and ignored us as if we were not there.
Emily tugged on my hand and we left the office murmuring our goodbyes. We went to the elevator and Emily pressed the button. We stood in silence, as she regarded me with a strange look in her eyes, almost like awe. I couldn't take the silence any longer so I looked at her and asked her why was she looking at me like that?
"Believe it or not, you are the only one to talk back to Mr. Summers. No one dares to do so."
I couldn't reply back for there was no proper response to what she just said. I thought it over and said "look, just because he is my boss, it doesn't mean he has the right to be an ass."
"Oh, I see. You will not last here long. Too bad, I think I really like you"
I was speechless. Emily was tactless; she is the kind of person who speaks her thoughts without thinking about the words itself.
We arrived at the office if the human resources and they started explaining in details the job qualities and qualification. They showed me the contract and told me to read it. I read it and I was satisfied, the salary was good, I got a good number of days off not to mention the vacations. They asked me if I had any questions and then I signed the contract. I was so happy, starting from now I am an official employee at one of the best advertising agencies ever. I wanted to jump and scream and dance. But I thought to myself that I should be more professional than that, that is until I arrive home MUAHAHAHHAHA!!!
After we left the human resources office, Emily said her goodbyes to me quickly and went on her way. I went to the elevator and waited patiently as I arrived down. As I was on my way I spotted Melissa waving her hand at me with a big smile across her lips.
"So, how did things go?" The excitement in her eyes was just so adorable. Melisa is a people person, she just loved to smile a lot and talk and gossip. I could tell that much even though it was the first time I met her.
"Everything was great, I got the job" I couldn't help the smile that spread on my face.
Melisa squeaked and came around her desk to hug me. "Oh, congratulations; so you're going to start tomorrow? Hey we should grab lunch together tomorrow. Oh you are going to love it here. And the team is amazing. Me, you, and Emily will be like best buds. We can be the three musketeers, or should I say workateers. Oh my god I just realized how lame that sounded sorry for that. So did you like Emily?" I have to stop her from talking, even though it was amusing to see her rambling on and on.
"Yes I start tomorrow, of course I would like to have lunch with you, and I like Emily just fine". The thought of Emily reminded me of the way she was acting all melancholy.
"Hey, Melisa"
"Oh just call me Mel"
"Ok Mel, can I ask you something?"
"Sure, go ahead"
"What was wrong with Emily today? She looked so sad"
Melisa was biting her lower lip. It was as if she was debating on whether she should tell me or not. I could tell that she trusted me, but at the same time it was not her secret to tell.
"Well, you will find out sooner or later. It's not like it's a secret really that whole company knows about it." It was as if she was giving herself reasons to tell me.
"Ok, listen carefully. A year ago, Emily met a guy who asked her out. She liked him and so she went out with him. Over time things developed between them, and eight months later, he proposed to her. Oh, she was so happy. She said yes, and so they started to plan the wedding. Everything was going great for her until a month ago. She received a call at night saying that her fiancé Philip was hit by a drunk driver. He died instantly because the blow was to his side. She was broken; she took a month off, and today was actually her first day back to work. We all told her to take a longer vacation, including Mr. Summers, but she said that working would help take her mind off Philip."
"Wait a second, Mr. Summers actually told her to extend her vacation?"
"Yes. I know that Mr. Summers is not exactly sociable but he is not cruel either. He could tell that she didn't fully recover from the incident. He actually went to Philip's funeral to support Emily. He also forced the whole team to go there as well. Of course back then he was not the leader of the team but rather just another member. He would not shut up about going and told everyone that he would arrange for the transportation needed, he would not stop nagging them until they all caved in. you see he can be quiet persistent when he puts his mind to it."
I didn't not know what to say, that was really nice of him. No wonder Emily supported him, and told me that he was not a bad guy. No I truly understood her position and loyalty to him; he had been there for her when she needed all the moral support in the world. Not only that, but he had also got the whole team to go. I was utterly speechless. Maybe I was fast to judge him. Maybe there is more than meets the eyes. But he was so rude, could it possibly be that he was a very rudely nice guy. I looked at Melisa and smiled.
"Ok, I got to go now. See you tomorrow"
"Goodbye Lizzy, until tomorrow"
