It was a dark, clear night. The sky was full of stars and a small breeze flew by as Karkat Vantas sat on one of the four thick logs that surrounded the fire pit.
He had a bright flame going inside it, and he was continuing to mess around with the burning twigs with a stick. He was alone outside, as it was around three a.m. Earth time and everyone else was asleep inside the camper they had brought.
John and Dave had invited Karkat and Sollux on a camping trip to 'show them what it was like on Earth' when, in reality, all they've done is sit around, cook things over the fire, and swim in the nearby creak. For the most part, everyone else seemed to be having fun but, the Cancer troll wasn't enjoying himself too much.
He'd had a lot on his mind as of late, and it caused him not only to miss out on the supposed 'fun' but, also kept him from sleeping. They'd already been on this trip for two nights, and each night Karkat had done the same thing; came outside, lit the fire like John had taught him, and fiddled with it until the sun rose.
He used this time to think about what was bothering him but, it didn't make him feel any better about it. The troll let out a heavy sigh, then grabbing his knees and pulling them up on the log with him, letting his head rest on them as he poked at the flames.
As he flipped a slightly larger log onto the rest on the fire, he heard the camper door open then gently shut again. Karkat's ears perked as he lifted his head up to see who had come out. His grey cheeks turned a bright red at the sight of Sollux Captor walking toward him.
He was still wearing his everyday clothes, as he'd fallen asleep in them and no one bothered to wake him to tell him to change. His hair was slightly messy around his horns and on the back of his head from sleeping, and he rubbed his red eye before making his way to his shorter friend.
"KK.." he muttered, sleepily, slipping his 3D-like glasses on and plopping down on the log next to him. "... what're you doiing up 2o late? iit'2 nearly three iin the morniing." Karkat turned his face from his yellow-blooded companion, facing back toward the fire. "NOTHING. I JUST... I COULDN'T SLEEP." Sollux sighed. "KK. We've been friiend2 for two long for that two work on me now. What'2 wrong wiith you?"
Karkat looked slightly towards him. "FINE." Karkat dropped his stick behind the log and turned towards Sollux. "I'VE JUST BEEN THINKING LATELY AND I... I THINK I MIGHT BE, YOU KNOW, FLUSHED FOR SOMEONE.." "Waiit, what? Really? KK, that'2 great! Why diidn't you 2ay anythiing before?"
"WELL..." Karkat began, his face becoming a bit sadder. ".. THE PERSON I'M FLUSHED FOR... I KNOW THEY'LL NEVER LIKE ME LIKE THAT.." Sollux's face became concerned as his friend's tone became depressed. He placed a hand softly on the smaller troll's arm. "What make2 you thiink that?"
Karkat rested his face in his knees, scared he might begin to tear up in front of his friend. "WELL.. THEY JUST HAVE SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE THEY COULD LIKE WHO ARE SO MUCH BETTER... IT JUST FEELS HOPELESS." The Captor's duel-colored eyes widened at his statement.
"ii'm 2ure that'2 not the ca2e, KK..." He said, beginning to gently rub his hand along Karkat's upper back, as he did often when the Cancer was upset because it strangely calmed him. "Now, who ii2 iit you liike?..." Karkat blushed then quickly looked away from him.
".. YOU'D JUST LAUGH.." "No, ii won't. ii promii2e.." Karkat sat up and looked Sollux directly in his eyes."IT'S YOU, CAPTOR. I'M FLUSHED FOR YOU.."
