in which the boys are just friends

blaise and neville had grown close exceptionally fast. blaise worked hard to make sure the other didn't think of him as scary and intimidating, even though he still had his moments. he was a slytherin after all. oftentimes, the two would go on hogsmeade trips together with their friends, walking around the little town and buying small souvenirs to take back to hogwarts with them, and then grabbing food at the three broomsticks. once in a while, they would split off to grab sweets at honeydukes.

pansy, knowing blaise's true feelings, would force him to "spill tea" on their developing relationship, to which blaise always had to reply with boring stories that had no meaning whatsoever. normally, blaise would have gotten bored by now, but he just couldn't stop himself from trying to learn everything he could about the gryffindor boy, even if he did claim that he wouldn't fall in love with him.

at least something good had come out of this relationship: the golden and silver trios had become more amiable towards each other. hogsmeade trips, as aforementioned, had delightful little crossovers, like hermione tagging along with pansy when the boys wanted their "boy time" (whatever that meant), and harry and ron dragging draco into weasley's wizard wheezes to play jokes on the unsuspecting pureblood.

the worst part about the development, really the only bad thing about it in blaise's opinion, was that neville now felt that the two were close enough to discuss his affections towards hannah abbot, putting blaise through emotional hell. even though neville did know that blaise liked him, it seemed that he had forgotten due to his clumsy nature. neville would go on and on about how hannah looked so pretty in that dress she wore today and hannah got such good marks on her potions quiz, she's so smart and hannah laughed at the joke i made during dinner after she invited me to sit next to her at the hufflepuff table. slowly, blaise was losing his resolve, but he would never admit it. slytherins weren't quitters.

well, they kind of are. but not when the situation is dire. and this situation was quite dire.

"psst, blaise," came an unusually loud whisper from next to him during a divination class. blaise was partnered with draco, who was currently trying unsuccessfully to read his tea leaves, and neville was paired with seamus at the table next to theirs.

"what," blaise replied.

"what's your future?"

blaise chuckled and turned to his partner.

"i don't know yet, it seems we've found something that draco is hopeless at."

"hey," the boy in question scowled. "it's really difficult, okay?"

"what have you got so far?" neville asked.

"well, this up here looks like a ring, but there's something beneath it that i can't make out."

"a ring?" blaise asked, confused. "what, am i going to get married soon or something?"

neville stood up rather abruptly and walked over to draco.

"here, let me see."

draco handed the mug to the other, making sure the handle remained on the right side.

"i see the ring you're talking about," neville said. "but there's definitely something else important underneath it. it's pretty big."

draco nodded, pointing at neville and looking at blaise as if to say 'see, i was right. he said i'm right.'

"maybe they're wings?"

"wings?" draco said, quickly turning his head away from blaise when the other began to speak. "like a bird?" he began to frantically flip through their divination textbook, looking for the meaning behind a bird.
