Babysitting chapter. Mallory's sitting for Jenny. Jenny shows her more new stuff that her parents got her, including a new baby doll. Jenny then demonstrates how to properly change a baby, using the doll and wasting actual baby products. Mal jokes that soon Jenny will be able to join the BSC, but Jenny isn't amused. They go to have a snack, and Mal asks Jenny how she feels about going to be a big sister. It's obviously a sore topic, but the BSC likes to harp on these sort of things. We get this terrific exchange:
"You know, I have seven brothers and sisters." Mal pointed out.
"I know. I'm sorry."
Ha! I always kind of liked Jenny. She acted like an actual kid most of the time. But to the BSC, she's a total brat. Yeah, she's the brat because she doesn't enjoy playing with dirt and her mother dresses her up in nice clothes as opposed to Hellspawn Karen who regularly makes fun of an innocent old lady, scares younger children for fun, and antagonizes people in her class. Sure.
Mal blabs on about how great it is that her parents don't know how to use birth control and that they rely on their eleven year old for childcare all the time because they're too busy cooking up another Pike to actually parent their existing children. Get this, Mallory actually says that she likes taking care of her little siblings all the time. It makes her feel "grownup and important." And then just six books later, in Mallory on Strike (Book 47), Mallory Pike goes on fucking strike because she's fed up with being the closest thing these kids have to a parent while she's still in the sixth grade. Whatever. Jenny doesn't want to lose her position as only child and is dreading the birth of the baby, and Mallory is unable to convince her that looking after your younger siblings 24/7 is a worthwhile use of your time. Next!
^ Poor, ugly Mallory being forced to carry the entire Pike family on her back. Smh.
