Alex's first class, English with Mrs. Bullet, was pretty uneventful. It was mostly basic things like going over the syllabus and the summer reading assignment. Then it was time for Mr. Lee's class.
Alex walked into class and quickly moved to the seat across from John. "Hi," Alex whispered, giving a small smile. "Hey," Laurens whispered back, returning the smile.
They remained in silence as Mr. Lee began to explain expectations and how the school year would work. "This year you will be doing a National History Day, or NHD, project. We will discuss it more next class, but the theme is Breaking Barriers in History. You will be allowed to work with a partner if you so choose."
A/n: if you don't know what NHD is and/or you've never done it for school, don't worry. i'll have mr. lee explain the basics as we go along so you can understand enough for me to write about it (mostly the lams aspect of it tho ;D)
Alex had been on the verge of falling asleep (why did the first day have to be so boring?), but this bit of information perked him up a little. This could be a chance to get to know John better if they were partners. He glanced at John to see his reaction, but John didn't seem to notice. Maybe I can ask him about it after class, Alex thought.
The rest of class was just as boring as English had been, and Alex couldn't stop thinking about John. What if he didn't want a partner on the project? What if he already had one? What if he got John to work with him but it turns out he's straight? Why were his freckles so cute? Too many questions, not enough answers.
Alex's third class, math with Mr. Eacker (which he wasn't at all qualified to teach; he couldn't even count past 7), sped by and before he knew it it was lunchtime.
Today it was surprisingly cool outside for August, only about 75 degrees (24 degrees for my Celsius peeps:)), so they were allowed to eat in the courtyard. Alex made his way to the bench he'd been at this morning to find Herc, Laf, and John already waiting. They were huddled together but quickly spread back out a little as Laf popped their head up and said "Salut, mon ami! Come on!"
Alex would be lying if he said his curiosity wasn't piqued. As he headed their way, he noticed John was a little fidgety. "Hey John!" Alex said. "Hey Alex!" he replied. "So I was wondering if you would want to be partners for NHD?" John said. "Sure!" Alex replied. "I was going to ask you the same thing, but I was worried you might've had a partner already."
