The next morning, Draco woke up early, as Mel kissed along his jawline.
"Good morning, sleepy," she said, wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
"What is your obsession with waking up early?" he asked, groaning and rolling over.
"Seize the day, Draco! Come downstairs, I'll make you some breakfast."
"Mel, we have house elves to do that. You don't need to make me breakfast."
"It tastes so much better when you make it yourself. And it's the holidays! This is one of the traditions you promised me that we could do this week, remember?"
"I'm getting up, I'm getting up," he said. Rather than changing, they went downstairs in their pajamas due to the early hour. Mel and Draco entered the kitchens, where the house elves thankfully had coffee prepared for her, and tea for him. Mel wanted to make spiced french toast, and before he knew it, Draco was dipping thick pieces of bread into a custard mixture, while she cooked it on the grill. Afterward, he carried the platter upstairs for her, and they drenched their pieces with syrup as they ate, looking at the fresh snow.
"Pretty nice, huh?" Mel asked, smiling at him.
"Pretty nice," he admitted, rubbing his hand along her back. Behind them, he heard the door open and saw his parents walk in, bundled from the cold.
"You're up early, Draco," his mother said.
"I have a good influence," he said.
"I see the house elves have been busy," she said.
"The house elves named Mel and Draco, you mean," he said, sipping his tea.
"Draco, you woke up before nine to flip french toast? You're really getting a quality education at Hogwarts." his father said, intrigued. He put a piece onto a nearby plate and picked up a fork. "Not bad."
"Mother, do we have any Christmas decorations?" Draco asked. He vaguely remembered having a tree when he was younger, but they hadn't celebrated in years. She smiled at him.
"I'm sure they're tucked away somewhere. I'll ask the house elves to look," she said.
"So you're going to spend the day what - trimming the tree like the sugar plum fairy?" Lucius asked.
"That's pretty much the intention, yes." Lucius walked away, clearly annoyed, while Mel stifled a giggle. They went upstairs, showering together in Draco's massive bathroom and dressing for the day. When they returned, there was a large pile of old decorations in the hall, as well as a massive, fresh tree that Narcissa had clearly summoned for them.
"This is perfect!" Mel said. She looked through the decorations, finding that most of them were black, silver and green. "Could this be more typically Malfoy? You guys can't even do traditional Christmas decorations?" Draco laughed.
"At least we're consistent."
"Do you think I could add a little color to these - what about gold instead of the silver? It's warmer. And maybe some red?" She said, pulling garlands out of the boxes, and picked up her wand.
"Perks of being 17," she said, with a smile, knowing he wasn't able to do magic outside of school until June. "Actually," she said, "want to see something pretty cool that I've been working on?" She put her wand away, and placed three silver ornaments on the counter. She focused on the ornaments, and slowly moved her hand over them. Slowly, they became a brilliant red.
