Poet's Note: "Dear Courageous" addresses just what it says it does: courage. I wrote this poem almost more for me (I know, how selfish of me) when I had... one of those days recently. Life often throws us curveballs, too often actually, and sometimes we get knocked down with the force, losing our breath and unsure how to piece ourselves back together. We feel like failures, incapable, idiots, so ashamed, but when this negativity overtakes us, we often overlook all that we have accomplished. How the journey, all the curveballs we've knocked out of the park on the very first try, each obstacle we've tackled on instinct, how those moments define how courageous we truly are. We've come so far, and as this poem will insist... it's way too far for us to give up now.

Dear Courageous,

There's a day the tides turn,
A moment when the world shifts its whole weight;
An hour when the secrets you're hiding,
Open into the light of day.

When security turns to threatened,
Stone walls blasted to the floor;
Earthquakes rumble, shaking,
You're not sure who you are anymore.

How in just one blink, one short second,
Your entire existence could change;
Humiliated in confusion, dejection,
Ashamed of how circumstances were played.

You had thought you were better,
So much stronger than this;
Capable of power out of question,
In control of how it would end.

When did your mind become so foolish?
How did you lose what you gained?
Why did this outcome so unanticipated,
Become the future in place of your dreams?

Your worst fear, filled in shame,
Overflowing in anger at yourself;
If you could just rewind the hands of time,
You'd ensure what you wanted would come.

All your careful plans, thought out steps,
Tumbled into the drain;
You found your life, found your calling,
Only for it to be swept away.

Where'd you stumble? Where'd you fall?
What'd you do wrong or mistake?
Is this fate or true failure?
Did destiny plan it out this way?

Your patches slowly ripping,
Revealing the hidden scars underneath;
Exposure, revelation uncanny,
You're frozen in shock of what you see.

Waves churning up inside,
Knees trembling, foundations start to shake;
What you pieced together now cracking,
Demolished mountain of your esteem.

Were you wrong? Were you right?
Were you somewhere in between?
Where to go? Where to turn?
What to trust when you've lost faith in your belief?

Your mountain built to crumble,
Only dropping back to the floor;
Emotions swelling, taking over,
There goes that one open door.

You don't know what to make of it,
Uncertain and afraid;
Your confidence severely shaken,
A recovery you'll never be able to make.
