"Shit. Shit shit shit," Peri mumbled, pacing her hotel room.
She did not need this today. Of all days.
Her stomach churned again, and she lurched for the trashcan, barely making it.
A soft knock came at her door. "Peri? Are you okay? I thought I heard barfing in there."
"Come in," Peri sighed. It was just Tsu. She could trust Tsu.
Tsu slid into the room, careful not to open the door too wide and accidentally let Tenya see Peri. Tradition said that grooms weren't supposed to see their bride until the ceremony. Tsu had on yoga pants and a blue-green flannel button down, ready to go get hair and makeup done. "I did hear barfing," Tsu said, crossing her arms and staring down at Peri on the floor. "Is this just nerves, or something else?"
Peri wiped her mouth with the sleeve of her button-up, one of Tenya's that she'd borrowed, and rocked back on her heels. "Something else," she pouted.
"Do you want some ginger ale? I can go get you one from the vending machine," Tsu offered.
Peri shook her head and hid her face. "I already have one, but thank you."
Tsu kneeled down next to Peri and rubbed her back. "So then what's going on? Do you want to talk about it?"
What did she do to deserve a friend like Tsu? Peri popped her head up and smiled sadly at her. "I love you so much. You are my best friend."
"You're my best friend too, but I don't understand what that has to do with anything," Tsu laughed.
Peri furrowed her brow and tried to look serious. "I am about to entrust you with a secret. The most secret secret I've ever told you, Tsu. Okay?"
"Okay?"
"I'm pregnant."
Tsu's eyes went wide, and she grinned uncontrollably. "Are you serious?"
"Twelve tests don't lie," Peri shrugged. They hugged on the floor, and Peri laughed. "It feels so good to finally tell someone. Ugh, carrying that around made my chest hurt."
"Have you told Tenya?" Tsu asked, and she had a feeling she already knew the answer.
Peri shook her head. "I wanted to tell him today," she muttered.
"That is a great plan!" Tsu said, placing her hand on Peri's. "We just have to get you ready first, right?" Peri nodded, and let Tsu help her up. "Let's go get our hair and makeup done, and maybe grab some food somewhere. You need to look nice when you tell him the big news."
"Okay, yeah," Peri said. Tsu could be so persuasive.

"Bien, mon petit chauve-souris?" Peri's father smiled down at her, looping his elbow in hers. She could see her love of language reflected in him, her gentle smile, her calculating mind.
"Oui, mon père," she nodded, heart fluttering in her chest like a way-too-big butterfly.
Her dad stepped up on her other side and slid his arm in her free one. "Look at my little girl. All grown up and getting married," he sighed. She could see her clear eyes reflected in his, her passion for helping, her courage.
"I know, right? Who knew," she laughed.
The music started up, and her hands got sweaty. Her parents pulled open the double doors, and swept her inside, walking up the flower-dusted aisle. Peri held her flowers (white tulips hidden among pale pink hydrangeas and white peonies) with trembling hands, letting her dads keep her tempo for her. Tenya stood at the end of the aisle, and all she wanted to do was sprint up there, kiss him, scream "I do!" and go on their honeymoon already.
