I hurried down the hallway of the hospital, trying not to be late.

I know that the patient only has a broken leg but what if something serious happens to her and I'm not there to help her?

I abruptly entered the room and the patient was asleep soundly. To be fair it was only 7 am so I let her sleep whilst I walked to check up on the other patients I'm assigned to.

Suddenly my boss called out to me.

"Darryl! Hey come here, we have a new patient for you"

I smiled and just nodded whilst following my boss to room 357.

A room I'm all too familiar with since I spent an entire summer there, sick with the flu.

"Darryl, this is Zak." My boss said.

I was silent for a moment in confusion.

"He's in a coma currently and his family is paying a lot for him to just stay alive. And your job is to take care of him."

Simple enough...

Right?

Oh my goodness I really hope I don't mess this up.

"Oh and try talking to him. Just so his brain is more active, okay? Just introduce yourself and talk for a while" Doctor Sherman (my boss) said before leaving the room hurriedly.

She's probably needed elsewhere.

I took a deep breath and sat down next to Zak in the chair at the side of his bed.

"Uh... Hi Zak, my name is Darryl... Um I-i'm supposed to talk to you. But. I don't really know what to talk about" I said with an awkward laugh.

Why does this feel like I'm talking to a dead person...

~~~
About two weeks passed and I was sitting with Zak again after giving him his weekly shots.
Talking to him was less creepy somehow, now its kinda like talking to a very heavy sleeper.
"I wonder what happened to you... no one will tell me, it's like a really big secret that everyone knows but won't tell me no matter what... and I-I kinda wish you would just wake up already" I said with a sigh.
I looked up at the small boy laying in the hospital bed.
There were wires all over him. It was kind of sad to see.
All of this uncomfortable, scary stuff just to keep him alive.
"Your sister told me you like to play minecraft... I do too" I said smiling sweetly.
"Maybe when you wake up we can play together! That is... if you even wanna talk to me when you wake up" I said with a nervous laugh.
I really wanna become friends with him. He's really Intresting.
After about 10 minutes of silence I sighed once more and decided to clock out for the night.
Waving to my coworkers as I left, all I could think about was Zak. If he's ever gonna wake up...
Will he just be brain dead there for the rest of his life?
When I finally got home I put my keys on the table along with my coat.
I looked around my apartment for a moment. It was small, with only one room, a kitchen, a small living room and a bathroom.
The walls were sort of a beige color with a few paintings hung up here and there.
