Chapter Two

But smiles would soon turn to horror, as Eliza Thompson was about to learn.

"Liza baby, get up!" Eliza's dad Will said, lightly tapping on her bedroom door. "Time for school."

Eliza groaned and rolled over. "I'm coming."

She dragged herself out of bed a few minutes later and headed to the bathroom.

She quickly brushed her teeth and threw on her pink sweatshirt.

She then grabbed her hairbrush and ran it over her slick new bob.

And then...

"AHHHHHHHHHH!" Eliza screamed until her throat was raw.

She stared in the mirror with horror and clamped her hand over her mouth, to keep from crying out again.

"What the hell?" Beth exclaimed, rushing into Eliza's Bathroom.

"Mom!" Eliza cried, turning to face her mom, "I'm, I'm bald!"

Or balding was more like it.

But when you have like four hairless patches scattered across your scalp and only fourteen hours until prom, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference either.

"Oh God. What did that woman do?" Beth shrieked, raking her hands through her daughter's brittle hair.

"I've got no idea," Will sighed, shaking his head, "it looked so good two days ago."

Eliza wiped her eyes and looked at her blue pillowcase, now covered in dark brown hair.

Her hair.

"What am I gonna do?" She croaked, fighting back tears, "I'm supposed to be prom queen! Carl's counting on me to be beautiful. And I look hideous!"

Will snapped his fingers and smiled.

"I've got it! A wig. Beth get one of your wigs."

Beth nodded and rushed out of the room.

She returned a few seconds later, with a black pixie wig.

"Okay let's see if this works," Beth whispered, stretching the cap over Eliza's head.

Eliza jumped up and ran over to her vanity mirror to check her reflection.

She frowned at the fuzzy blob that tipped over her forehead. "I look gross!"

Beth sighed and put her hand on Eliza's shoulder. "If only my head weren't so big."

TEN HOURS TIL PROM.

"Hey, I called you four times this morning, but you didn't pick up. What were you doing?" Carl indignantly asked, leaning against Eliza's locker.

"What?" Eliza said, sounding a bit distracted.

Carl rolled his eyes. "I said"-

"Oh, oh sorry. I was asleep. You know getting my dress ready and stuff."

Carl nodded, satisfied with that explanation.

"Speaking of which, what up with the hat?" He chuckled.

Eliza ran her hand over her blue baseball cap, then mumbled, "I just...thought it might rain, so I threw it on."

"Cute," Carl grinned, reaching to yank it off.

"No," Eliza practically shouted, jumping back.

Carl looked taken aback by Eliza's sudden outburst and a wave of embarrassment rushed through the girl.

"What's wrong with you?" Carl demanded.

"I just did something special to my hair and I don't want you to see it until tonight, "Eliza quickly lied, patting Carl on the shoulder.

Carl playfully rolled his eyes. "Whatever."
