Chapter Six

FIFTY-TWO MINUTES TIL PROM.

Although She'd rather have been slowly poisoned, Eliza forced herself to put her arm around Wilbert's almost non-existent waist and pose for twenty-six cringe worthy pictures.

And even worse she let Wilbert plant a kiss on the side of her face for the last photo.

Though she wasn't about to let him get away with it.

"When'd I ever give you permission to kiss me?" Eliza snapped as soon as they were down the road.

"You never said I couldn't," Wilbert shouted back, looking over at her.
Eliza rolled her eyes. "Well don't, freak!"
"You look nice too," Wilbert replied, his voice sarcastic.

"Oh please! Don't act like anything about this is normal. Okay? If you weren't blackmailing me, there's no way in hell I'd be going to prom with you."

"Well then it's a good thing I'm blackmailing you," Wilbert retorted, laughing a bit.

Eliza opened her mouth to reply, when Wilbert made a sharp left turn and pulled into an Arby's parking lot.

"What do you think you're doing?" Eliza asked, watching Wilbert take off his seatbelt.

"What does it look like I'm doing? Okay? I missed dinner and I'm gonna grab a sandwich."

"We're gonna be late!"

Wilbert rolled his eyes, then unlocked his door.

"We've got plenty of time Liza."

Eliza groaned. "Why can't you just order something at the drive-thru like an ordinary person?"

Wilbert turned and flashed Eliza a smile.

"Don't you know by now Eliza? There's nothing ordinary about me."

"Well you're certainly right about that!" Eliza shouted, as she struggled to follow behind Wilbert on her two-inch heels.

"You're a freak!"

One pastrami sandwich, two cokes and three fries later, Wilbert and Eliza piled back into the car and headed for the school.

The school parking lot was packed by the time Eliza and Wilbert arrived.

Eliza noticed a few limos speeding down the road on their way to prom and a pang of sadness flooded through her as she remembered the limo, she and her friends had ridden in two years ago.

But instead she sat in the front seat of a gross old Toyota, watching Wilbert, who was flung over his seat, searching for something in the back of his car.

"Here it is," he exclaimed, twisting back into a sitting position.
Eliza looked down at the clear plastic container that Wilbert held.

Inside of it was a yellow geranium!

"Here," he grinned, clearly satisfied with himself.

"Are you freaking kidding me dude?" Eliza shrieked, snatching the corsage out of his hands.

"It's yellow."

"So?" Wilbert asked, eyebrow raised.

Eliza rolled her eyes and waved a hand over her dress. "So, you dumb-ass, my dress is blue! This dumb thing won't match."

"What are you even talking about? Blue and yellow go great together. They make green."
"So you wear it!" Eliza snapped.
"No you wear it," Wilbert replied.
