Chapter Four

STILL SIX HOURS TIL PROM.

"Come on!" Eliza wailed, sinking to her knees. "Isn't there anything else you want?"

"I want you in the back"-

"That was so bad!" Someone announced from down the hall.

Eliza gasped as her friends entered the auditorium.

"Hey, Lizzy where'd you"- Cameron started to laugh when her eyes landed on Wilbert.

"What're you doing here? Are you messing with Eliza again?"

Wilbert turned to face Cameron, a wide smile on his face.

"Now why would I want to harass my prom date?"

Eliza nearly fainted, as she watched her friend's expressions turn from shock to horror.

"You're what?" Mariah squealed, looking over at Eliza, who was still on her knees.

"You heard me," Wilbert proudly stated.

"Liza what the heck is he talking about?" Cynthia asked, her voice full of disgust.

Eliza was sure she'd never experienced a full- blown panic attack before.

Until today.

Her skin was crawling.

Her heart was pounding.

Her mouth was dry.

And she couldn't get enough air into her lungs.

"Well?" Wilbert asked, eyebrow raised.

Eliza scanned the room and saw the disgust in her friend's eyes grow.

But she also saw how steady Wilbert stood and how determined he looked as he waited to get an answer.

And Eliza knew what that answer had to be.

So, she swallowed the lump in her throat and said the only thing she could say.
"Yes."

As soon as that word left Eliza's mouth, she started to feel sick.

Like really sick.

Like vomit sick.

A sea of nausea crashed into the poor girl and before she could let loose on their beautiful banner, Eliza clutched her stomach and ran out of the auditorium, gagging all the way.

"Well you don't feel warm and your color's returned. Maybe it was something you ate?" Nurse Myers said yanking the thermometer out of Eliza's still dry mouth.

"I still don't feel very well," Eliza mumbled, wiping her lips.

And she really didn't.

Her head was swimming and her stomach felt like she'd swallowed a boulder.

Nurse Myers nodded and pointed to the pillow that lay on the metal cot behind her.

"You lay down. I'll call your mom."

As soon as Eliza got home, she dashed upstairs and buried herself under her covers.

As expected, Beth came to check on Eliza almost immediately.

"You feeling okay moo moo?" She gently asked.

"Mmhmm. Just a little nauseous," Eliza mumbled.

"You might have to miss prom baby," Beth replied.

"No!" Eliza shouted, shooting up immediately.

Beth's eyes went wide, and a slow smile crossed her face. "Okay."
