The muffled and distant sound of music blasted through your apartment walls as you stared at the clock on your nightstand for what felt like hours. The neighbors always played music, no matter the time of the day, thankfully it wasn't bad music.
You quite liked it actually, always listening in contentment. Today it was some Phoebe Bridgers song, they seemed to be fond of her music.
You lived alone in a studio apartment, it was spacious and homey but like all apartments, a little awkward. You loved it. The open space kept you up at first but knowing someone was always next door, listening to music, was a bit comforting. Besides you worked nights so, it's not like you got much sleep anyways.
When you did sleep it was on weekends during the day or in the afternoon after your classes finished. Then once the clock struck seven you'd wake up and get ready for work, get there at nine and stay there until you were sent home for the night. Whether that was two, three, five, six? Well, that depended on the day.
Working at a club was... a little taxing, to say the least. You were a waitress, a bartender, and a personal servant to wealthy men when they demanded it. However, you loved it. Your coworkers were the best and the pay was even better.
As a college student living on your own, you needed as much money as you could get.
So you didn't mind too much that your uniform was always more revealing than your mother would approve of. In fact, she'd be rolling over in her grave if she could see you now.
She probably could. Sorry, mom.
You also didn't care you had to dress in ridiculous costumes some nights. The packed club on those nights promised for a huge payday. Whether it was a maid outfit, a devil or angel costume, or a bunny girl outfit. You didn't care, because if it meant staying in school and being able to live here. Hell, you'd go in a swimsuit if they asked you.
College life wasn't necessarily a lonely life, but it was stressful and if you weren't at work, you were alone. That's why you were anxious to get to work, Spring Break had just begun, meaning a full work week and a huge paycheck.
You were flipping through the TV channels, only wanting to pass the time as you waited for the clock to hit seven. That was when the news station caught your eye.
The news anchor began to go on about some big fight between some pro hero's and villains in the middle of downtown.
The League of Villains. You thought, a hint of distaste lingering with you.
It wasn't that you hated villains, even though you probably should, but to you, everyone was fighting for something. In their minds, maybe they thought what they were fighting for was truly right.
That didn't change the fact that civilians were always getting killed, tormented and terrorized by their actions.
In a world full of hero's and villains, you were one of the few that could say you were on the middle ground. You didn't like either of them, but you weren't about to risk your life to put an end to them.
You just didn't care for either of them. At all. You were by no means nihilistic, but God all you wanted was to rid yourself from hero society. That's another reason why money from work was so important.
After the clock hit seven you got ready in a timely manner, already having the routine down pat. You had been working there for almost two year's now, ever since you started college, so it was hard for you to be late.
Looking in the mirror, you made sure everything about you looked perfect. Without another glance you slid on some sneakers, then grabbed your purse and your heels. Stepping out of your house you locked the door and began to make the walk to the train station.
