Today, it was my mothers birthday, and the family was getting together for dinner to celebrate. Was I excited? No. Was I nervous? Yes.
But, Jon was going to be with me, and he made even the dullest lights seem brighter.
Jon now had a couple of his Adidas tracksuit sets at my house, so he didn't always need to go home to get changed. We both got ready in my bedroom, and then I went into the bathroom to put on my makeup.
As I tried to put my eyeliner on, I noticed my hand was shaking. I took a deep breath and tried my eyeliner again. I messed up the line, getting it up near my eyebrow and I felt the anger rising in my throat. I ditched my eyeliner pencil against the wall and put my head in my hands. I didn't want to go and see my family, just for them to ruin all the progress I've made in the past few weeks. I didn't want to feel like I was nothing again. I sobbed into the cuffs of the long-sleeved band shirt I was wearing, trying to keep quiet so that Jonathan didn't hear me. I was so focused on not making any noise that I didn't realise he was saying my name, right in front of me.
"Mia? Hey, what's wrong?" He asked when I finally looked up at him.
"I- I just panicked a little. Seeing my family is never a good thing, they always make me feel so small." I said quietly, trying to keep the sobs in my throat.
"Hey, I'm going to be there this time. I won't let you feel small, I promise. You're the most bright and beautiful person I've ever met, and if they don't see that, they're the small people. Just remember that"
I nodded, feeling so lucky that I had him. "Here," he said, grabbing a wipe and wiping the eyeliner off my face.
I giggled a little, "thanks". He picked up the eyeliner I had thrown against the wall and handed it back to me. "You got this," he smiled and walked back out of the bathroom, squeezing my shoulder as he passed.
Usually, I would just go to family dinners feeling nothing; feeling empty. This is because I was already in that negative headspace, feeling like I had nothing to lose. But now, I had something to lose; and it was scarier than ever.
After finishing my makeup Jon and I went out the door, prepared to brave the most twisted of families. When we arrived at my mother's house, Jon pulled over and asked, "you ready?"
"yeah," I sighed, peering into the house
We knocked on the door and after a few moments, it flew open. It was my mother.
"Oh. Mia. Hello, who's this?" She asked, looking Jon up and down and then looking back at me with a concerned look on her face.
"Hi, mum. This is Jonathan," I said, grabbing his hand.
"Oh, well, it would be nice to have a heads up if you're going to bring someone," my mum eyed me.
"Oh really? Sam never needs to give you a heads up when he brings a girl over." I said, referring to my big brother.
"Well he helps me out more than you do, and he actually makes an effort unlike you."
"He moved overseas to get away from you, mum, and why are you trying to pick a fight right now? We haven't even entered the fucking house yet." I was getting angry but Jonathan squeezed my hand, reminding me to keep my cool. "Can we just come in?" I sighed. Mum just stepped aside, bitterly allowing us to walk through.
We walked into the outdoor area where my parents always have their gatherings, and the first thing I noticed was that my older brother was standing in the group of people, talking to my dad. He must have come back from his college overseas for mum's birthday.
