(Middle school)

“Monster!”

“Only humans can play volleyball!”

“You can’t only rely on your instincts!”

The words swarmed around Satori’s brain as he stared at the kids around him.

“B-But, my guesses are right m-most of the time,” he stuttered.

“Yeah, just like a monster! And There won’t always be right! You should just quit!”

You watched the scene unfold from afar, scuffing your foot nervously against the ground. I should help him.

“You’re just a freak!”

“Just stop!” Tendou said, biting his lip.

“Why should we?! Monsters aren’t allowed to play on human teams!”

That was the breaking point for you as you took a step forward, glaring at the boys, “Hey! Leave him alone!”

“Huh?” The bullies turned around, staring at you, “Why are you sticking up for this freak?”

“I don’t know what you're talking about. From my view, I’m sticking up for that kid right there,” you pointed to Satori, “I haven’t been sticking up for you guys at all,”

“Oi, are you calling us the freaks?!” One of them approached you slowly and you gulped, taking a tiny step back.

“Well uhh- I mean. Heheh,” you scuffed your foot along the floor, “...Yes?”

“You-”

“Hey. Let’s just leave. It’s not worth the trouble,” a different boy said, causing the rest of them to stop, sending you and Tendou one last glare before leaving.

The two of you sat in silence before he spoke up, “Thanks…”

“No problem,” you replied awkwardly, walking over to him and offering a hand, “I’m (L/N) (Y/N), first year,”

“Tendou Satori, second year,” he grabbed your hand, standing up.

“Oh…” you blinked, “You’re my upperclassmen. Ah-”

“Hey, don’t worry about it,” he patted your shoulder.

“Okay,” you nodded as the two of you walked out of the room.

“You really don’t think I’m a monster?” Satori asked after some time and you glanced up at him.

“Not at all. Actually, I think it’s super cool how great your instincts are! Mine suck,” you sighed as you then walked into a wall. You stumbled back, rubbing your forehead, “I’m also clumsy,”

He stared at you for a couple of seconds before bending over and laughing. A loud, free laugh, as if he hasn’t truly laughed in ages. “You’re really funny (Y/N)!”

“Huh?” You blinked at your upperclassman, the smile on his face making him seem like a completely different person than a minute ago. As he continued to laugh you could feel yourself chuckling, then eventually bending over, laughing alongside with him. You let out a wheeze as you wiped a tear away, “You’re pretty weird Satori,”

He shrugged, “Better than ‘monster’, right?”

“Like I said before, I don’t think you're a monster at all,” you gave him a small smile.

He paused, studying your face for any sign of a lie, but it was his instincts that told him you were telling the truth. So he returned your smile with a much larger one, “I’m glad.”
