The whirring of the blades of the helicopter was a loud whooshing in my ears even with the headset on. I was seated next to my mother.
She was an animal expert. We spent most of my life traveling the world studying the behavior of different carnivores. Mr. Alfor had seen her work and studies and hired her right on the spot.
Even as her son I wasn't allowed to be in the loop of what sort of animals she was working with here on the island. It wasn't until this sudden weekend invite, that I learned what my moms secretive job was.Glancing at her now I felt a sense of pride. She worked so hard to get a great job like this. Unable to provide a consistent home for me she always had to take me with her on expedition's. I always enjoyed it and learned a lot.
"Keith, there it is." I followed to where my mother was pointing out of the bubble window to see an island of green appear through the thick fog.
The helicopter jolted and dipped as we descended. The turbulance was overwhelming. I tightened my seatbelt around me. My mother reached out to steady me in my seat.
"Moooom." I groaned embarrassed.
She was always treating me like a little kid. I suspected it had something to do with that she regretted I didn't have a normal childhood. Raising a kid in crocodile infested swamps, dangerous plains of the Savannah, and around beasts in jungles wasn't ideal.
As the helicopter finally landed I unbuckled my seatbelt and followed my mother out into the hot humidity.
Waiting for us beside a silver gas powered jeep with a large red stripe on the side, was a tanned older gentleman with snow white hair and beard. He was wearing a white collared button down, and white pressed pants.
Isn't he dying in that thing?
I glanced down at my sneakers, black jeans and red t-shirt.
I guess I could've dressed better too.
He waved us over and shook my moms hand. He smiled down at me and looked up as the helicopter took off again. Once I could hear better he reached out and shook my hand as well.
"Welcome to Jurassic Park. You must be Keith. I've heard a lot about you. We are so excited to have you." His deep accented voice was an odd match to the excitement in his tone. I smiled politely in return.
"Keith, this is Mr. Alfor. He owns the island, and began this project seven years ago." My mom explained as we walked to the jeep. My mom rode shot gun while I sat in the back.
Mr. Alfor drove all the while explaining how this weekend was very important to the company and to him. If this weekend went off without a hitch then they could officially open the doors to the public within the next month.
The camp where I would be spending my time this weekend was a way for kids who weren't super rich to be able to enjoy the park by winning contests and such.
"Now don't hold back. By Monday your opinion along with the others will sway our lawyers into opening the park, and I want to know all that you think about it." He smirked in the rearview mirror.
"The others will be arriving by ferry soon. We will meet them at the docks."Before I could ask how many others there would be he slowed as we passed through an at least thirty foot tall electrified fence. The hum of the fence competed with the purr of the engine in the jeep.
"We have these surrounding the border of the island and all throughout the park. We also have thirty foot thick blockades of cement centered with steel and moats creating a border around each paddock." Alfor gestured to the fence we had just passed.
