June, Halkidiki

Things didn't go well until June.

She let her hair grow again and she was more beautiful than ever, her skin was glowing, her hair was curlier than ever and she still didn't speak to me.

I did everything I could, but she wouldn't go anywhere or do anything with me. So after she graduated, at the end of June, I shoved her in an airplane to Halkidiki and didn't stop until I saw her skin being kissed by Greece's scorching sun.

She seemed happy, for quite a few days. We would take long walks on the beach at night when the heat wasn't too much for my body, and we'd watch the sunset every evening. In Finland, summer means the sun never sets. In Greece, however you can kiss the sun goodbay every 12 hours.

''I am sorry for doing all of that to you,'' she said one night, with her feet in the water, sitting on a sunbed.

''Why were you like that, Amara? I suffered...''

''I was...unhappy. There were the exams, and you didn't have any time for us and...''

Her doe eyes watered, andher tiny hand settled my palm on the small of her belly.

''Pelle, we need you.''

It was maybe the happiest day of my life

It was maybe the happiest day of my life. I wrote down entire pages of how I shouted and ran up and down the beach and cried of happiness, and how I picked her up and promised her a perfect life a thousand times over.

But I won't quote any of those here, for the events were to take a different turn than expected.

We spent a week playing with the sand like toddlers and swimming until our fingers would become more wrinkled than grandma.

Here's what I wrote down while sitting on my back in the sand, watching her building a sand castle:

''Amara is now a different shade. Amara is now Afrodite herself, forever beuatful, forever young, born from the very foam of the Mediterranean. Amara is Gaia, and from Amara, Zeus and  Poseidon and Hades will give me life and happiness. Amara will be Freya herself, the very embodiment of love, and lust, and beauty, and fertility a thousand times over.

Amara is life. Amara is everything and she's holding the whole world inside her.''
