"If it isn't Miss Marie," Zayn grinned as he turned around.
His beautiful brown eyes shone as he looked at her. It almost made Selena forget how her eyes lost the same brightness it had before. The contacts she wore never did capture the way her eyes shone before.
She giggled at the name. It was what he had given her when he first asked. She was suspicious of him then so she didn't want to give him her first name.
And even after they got to know each other he still kept calling her that. He was one of the rare parts of her past life she was fond of.
"I almost didn't believe it when Ronnie told me you were looking for me," Zayn said.
"You said find you when I needed help," Selena said.
"And even if you didn't."
Selena gave him a small smile. "You could've looked for me too, you know. I know it's easy for you to."
Zayn gave her a soft smile, "I promised I wouldn't until you find me first. And now here you are."
"You opened a shop."
"Someone's nagging voice wouldn't leave me alone."
Selena chuckled, "Only because I knew it's what you wanted."
They both took a moment as if reminiscing about their short time together. It was the summer after Selena's freshman year in college. She didn't want to go home, afraid that she might run into Harry.
Most of the friends she had made went home to their families or had made plans to go on a little trip with their cliques. She was actually invited to go on one of these trips by her then roommate.
They were going camping with a few other people. Zayn was one of them. They were the first persons in the meetup place that one morning. Her roommate had jogged off to a nearby convenience store to buy some coffee.
She was waiting with her trusty backpack, reminiscing how she used to go camping with Harry and his family, when Zayn approached her.
She didn't know he was with them so when he struck a conversation with her and asked for her name, she gave him her second name.
Nobody else knew it anyway.
She thought he was just a passerby who just wanted to make small talk. She was just being safe. But it turned out he was friends with her roommate and was invited to the trip as well.
She was slightly embarrassed when her roommate introduced them.
She tried hard to avoid him but with only five people on the trip, it was a difficult task. Not to mention Zayn kept talking to her as well.
It was not hard to warm up to him, especially with Zayn laying on his charms thick on her, too. So when he asked her out, there was no other answer but yes from her mouth.
They spent a beautiful summer together - seeing each other almost everyday and having the time of their lives. They looked like a good match that everyone who knew them was surprised when they parted when summer ended.
It was a mutual decision and there weren't any bad blood between them. Selena always remembered Zayn. Theirs was the first and only mature breakup she had.
"You look well," Zayn commented.
He knew. Selena knew he did. After all, he ran with that same crowd so it wasn't a surprise that he heard about her and what happened before.
She had heard he had been in and out of the state for a while back then for some family thing. Still, her eyes would sometimes wander the crowd and look for Zayn, hoping to catch up with a familiar face in the midst of the mess that slowly crept up on her life. He must've been busy with the shop because she never did see him.
