For those of you who listen to music while reading like I do for some reason, I put Ariana Grandes 'Problem' above since it's a fitting song for this chapter 😊 Also I want to say that the questioning and ordering of law by the police/investigators in this story is unrealistic just FYI.
(Your POV)
Attending a funeral with a unknown cause of death was the weirdest feeling. Funerals are supposed to be peaceful, a last goodbye. But how could anyone have peace at Mariah's memorial service? Nobody could say a proper goodbye when the investigation was still open.
You didn't cry, none of this felt like reality. Your mother rubbed your back soothingly to offer comfort and you gave her a weak smile. Maybe all this would feel real when school started again and Mariah wasn't there...It had to sink in at some point didn't it?
"How much longer do you think school will canceled? I know the investigation comes first but it has already been a week" you asked your parents on the drive home
"I don't know, Y/N hopefully not too much longer" your dad replied
You hoped not either, in a way you kinda wished things would just go back to normal. Except for meeting Adam...that part you wanted to keep.
(Time skip)
You'd never felt more babied in your life, it was really starting to tick you off. After twisting your parents arms, they allowed you to go out for a bike ride by yourself on the condition you took your cell phone and a pocket knife.
Granted there was a murderer loose in town so their worry wasn't totally misplaced...but it was broad daylight on a Saturday. Everyone was out and about so the murderer would have to be a fool to try anything.
Hiding the small knife in your pocket along with your phone, you headed off on your bike. You couldn't express how good it felt to be out of the house, since you were doing school online currently you'd been cooped up inside day in and day out.
It still didn't feel like fall as the sun gleamed down on you, but at least today there was a cool breeze in the air. You stopped bicycling momentarily so you could tie your hair back. You'd prefer not to have your hair in your mouth but the wind was accomplishing that.
Starting again, you listened to the sound of your tires on the old town roads. Pot holes were a nuisance, forcing you to swerve back and forth on the road just to avoid them.
You'd lived in this town for a long time now so you knew all the roads and how they connected. Still, as you came to bypass Adams house you weren't sure how it didn't cross your mind that this route was a bad idea.
Your heart and curiosity overtook your brain when you saw Adam standing outside his apartment. He stood in his front lawn, police cars parked all around his house. His front door was wide open and loud talking came from inside.
"H-hi Adam" you called out
He turned his dark eyes to you and his lips tugged up in a smile.
"Hi girl who saved my life" he replied
You were confused until you realized.
"Oh that's right, you still don't know my name do you? Um I'm Y/N" you introduced, biking up to him
"Telling a murderer your name isn't wise" he joked...you think
You forced a smile and he laughed. His laugh was so much higher than his deep voice but somehow that made him more lovable. Oh no...what were you thinking, you said you'd start using your head instead of heart! You couldn't love him in any way!
