CHAPTER FOUR - give me a pizza your heart
Rizzo's face dropped in disappointment as the words left Kenickie's mouth, nobody was more shocked than Ducky, she hadn't expected him to carefully choose - she had expected him to go with Rizzo with a smug look on his face to prove a point that he didn't care about her but he couldn't do it to her, not Dulcibella.
He had fell in love with her as soon as he got to know her, she always had a soft spot for the T-Bird, even when he had first dropped her books when she was talking to Eugene, the biggest geek in school. She had decided not to wear her pink jacket that day so she was practically unrecognisable from behind without the signature jacket. He had been passing with the boys when he flunked her books to the floor and she had called him out for being a prick. He had apologised as soon as he realised it was her and asked her out on a date. She had declined, smugly. With a simply phrase, "no, you'll work for it."
Even though he had completely broke her heart, he couldn't leave her to go off with someone else, not after he had seen her back at school- it didn't feel right.
Kenickie opened the car door for her as she got in the front passenger seat and she muttered, "why do you suddenly care when you were clearly eye-fucking Rizz."
He didn't reply and he almost slammed the door shut.
When they reached the diner, it was busier as the weekend had approached. It was loud, buzzing with music, suitable for dancing. The girls bounced into the diner and got a table, the guys moved tables and chairs over to make one big table. It was no secret that the boys had been crushing on the girls for some time. Putzie had asked Ducky many a time on how to talk to Jan, she had just laughed and told him it would come naturally.
Ducky found herself sitting next to Danny, who was sulking over Sandy. Sandy had got her parents to pick her up from her house because she hadn't felt well after Frenchy piercing her ears.
Rizzo had sat next to Kenickie, shamelessly flirting away with him in front of everyone.
"You know, you could just be nice to her and explain why you were such a doofus." Ducky teased her friend and his eyes lit up with an idea. He could do that, he could prove to her that he was worth the second chance.
"Yeah and what about lover boy over there?" Danny whispered in Ducky's ear, making sure nobody was listening into their conversation. From across the table, Kenickie was slowly clenching his jaw at the sight of his best friend and ex girlfriend whispering all quiet.
"You know when Rizzo digs her claws in, it's no use. Anyway, he made his choice." She huffed as the waitress, Vi, came over.
"What are you young ones wanting?" Vi asked, holding her pen and paper out waiting for the usuals to order. She was no stranger to the T-Birds and Pink Ladies coming in and causing havoc.
"Can I have I, ugh, cheese burger and fries."
"I'll have a apple pie for me and Jan."
"Can I have a cheese pizza with extra cheese and some fries, a cherry coke and a chocolate milkshake. I, ugh, layered cake too." Ducky rhymed off what she wanted, eating her emotions was a great thing, she thought that she could share around the table, with Frenchy.
Small talk was around the table when the food came, Rizzo had gone off to the bathroom with Marty.
"God, Ducky, you eat like a dude sometimes." Rizzo remarked, coming back to the table, disgusted with the amount of food Ducky had infront of her.
Ducky gulped her cherry cola out at the statement that she had heard from behind her, it was always the same, every chance Rizzo got, she took it to publicly humiliate Ducky to prove a point she was the better choice.
"I haven't ate anything all day guys, come on, cut me some slack." Ducky awkwardly laughed. She felt as though she was under a microscope half the time with everyone, especially her mother and father.
Russo sat down beside Kenickie and started eating her cheeseburger as conversation picked up again. Marty and Rizzo were talking about a new band who were coming to town.
"You want half my burger, Ducks?" Kenickie announced as he tore the burger in half and held it out over the table. She smiled awkwardly as she stood up and reached over the table and took the food. It was like nothing had changed but everything had and she couldn't just forget it.
"Thanks Nicky."
"You wanna go to the gig with me? Marty and Putzie are going?" Rizzo asked her new found interest and he agreed, not before he slipped a look at Ducky.
"My mum is out for the night if you want to come over tonight, Kenick." She smirked as she held his eye contact and he smirked back.
"Just breathe, you've got this." Her inner monologue was calming her down as she took a drink of her cola.
She thought about all the times she had assumed that Kenickie was her soulmate, she really thought he was the one. She was ready to run away with him that night he broke her heart — she was ready to leave everything behind and start a new life, a fresh start where nobody knew them. It was supposed to be a new beginning instead he had freaked out and told her that he couldn't do the relationship anymore.
She couldn't watch the scene unfold in front of her, she had to leave. She needed to get out. She abruptly got out of her chair and walked away from the table, she just walked away from the group she had been apart of for so long. She didn't stop when she got out of the diner, she just kept on walking. She didn't get far unfortunately as she heard her name being called.
"Ducky, wait." He called out for her as he began jogging behind her to catch up with her but she just shook her head and kept walking. How dare he.
"Please Ducks."
"Dulcibella." He called as he caught up to her.
She spun around so that she was facing him, "you don't get to call me that. You lost that privilege."
"Please, don't leave. Come back inside, you can't walk alone, it's dark." He begged as he went to touch her hand but she pulled back. She didn't want to feel his touch or she might completely combust.
"Do you think I want to watch you flirt with Riz? My friend. Well, she's apparently my friend. When it comes to getting dicked, she just doesn't care. Do you think I want to see you? Interact with you?" She raised her voice as the tears started flowing.
He stood closer as he started to wipe her tears, at this point she just accepted it, she couldn't do anything else and she didn't want to do anything else. She just wanted to stand there and enjoy his fingers against her face.
"Ducky, I'm sorry. I'm sorry." He repeated as he rested his forehead against hers, sighing heavily as she closed her eyes.
"You need to leave. Go back to Rizzo, I'm okay now."
"I can't leave you like this." He whispered, his breath hitting her face.
"You had no problem leaving me before Kenickie, you shouldn't have a problem doing it again."
