"She has a right to know about his diary, we can't land her in more danger than she already is." The Portal nodded in confirmation at the Dark Creature and glanced at the sun drifting gradually lower in the sky. As the different hues of blue, indigo and amber mixed, lowering too, Portal settled in its shadowed essence.
The Dark Creature added, "Once again, she is of age. If we don't act soon, the universe will lose the bloom of its flowers, the soil will perish, and this earth-"
"Will cease to exist. I know how it goes. What of it? Surely we can wait a few more weeks for the girl to grasp some sense of her potential." The Portal spoke quick and dignified, a picture of sophistication and formal manner. It raised a brow. "Is there something in it for you?"
The Dark Creature huffed and its magic shifted, twirling to mimic what would have been a humourless laugh had it been human. Magic incarnate now chilled, stirding slightly to the right, moving further from the Portal. Sparks of light followed the two creatures in their wake as they looked forward, admiring the view of the now starry night sky. Or, at least one of them were. The Dark Creature bathed in its dark all day, therefore, stood highly uninterested. Yet endless obsidian had never circled the Portal, so, a level of appreciation exerted its essence.
"Even if there was something in it for me, I'd still be damned if the world went to hell, for then we'd all follow suit. I'm thinking, either I'm too good for this world, or it's too good for me...because I never seem to fit in. No matter the place, time or style." The Dark Creature had turned around by now, 'back' facing the sky in ignorance. The Portal stayed watching the sky and didn't flinch as it said, "Selfish and arrogant."
"Excuse me?"
"You're selfish and arrogant. You never think for others or search for a bigger picture when it's needed. It is always about you."
The Dark Creature settled into a lethal quiet–its primal instincts being attack, pin, kill. The Portal out of bravery or idiocy–perhaps both, continued.
"Things like us will never fit in; you should have accepted that by now."
"I have, but-"
Another interruption.
"Defensive now, really?" Portal 'shook its head' and gave the gesture of tutting what would have been its tongue and teeth. Not even a murderer's worst nightmare would wish to find out what the replacements of those human features were. Death would be a safer, easier option. For even though Portal's essence bathed in light, that didn't mean it had a clean conscience. It spoke again, low and feral, another one of its retorts.
"This isn't about you anyway. This is about the world's and possibly the universe's future."
"I know that, but-"
Portal raised volume, voice imitating a ghost-like, screeching sound that would burst a human ear drum. "I've seen you be clever, poised and strategic. I've also seen you be loving towards a 15-year-old human girl and be a gracious winner." Portal lowered its 'brows' again, displaying pity in a way that would have made one flinch of humiliation and embarrassment.
The Dark Creature merely stared, assessing, waiting patiently.
"I've never known you to be a coward. A disappointment. A shame on our kind-"
The Dark Creature gave a glare that Portal interpreted as, Got it. Now, back off. Then the creature spoke, voice deep, tone unfathomable. "3 days. 3 days for the girl to 'grasp a sense of her potential'. She has already improved immensely, physically and mentally. Anymore time and she might end up arrogant like me." It scoffed, then continued. "Any less and you won't think she's ready. Such faith you have."
Portal gave a 'smirk' and shuffled into a teleport position, please for winning this round and getting its point across. "I pride myself on my exceptional levels of trust and belief. Pleasure doing business with you." The 'smirk' faded. "Until next time, friend." It emphasised the word as it vanished, leaving the canopy of the forest. It headed elsewhere as whilst it admired the novelty the darkness gave, its true home lay in pure light.
The Dark Creature 'scowled' at the nickname, for they were not companions, nor acquaintances. Or as it liked to convince itself. They were just partners in crime, as humans like to say. Nothing less, nothing more.
A/N:
Hey everyone,
This chapter's a bit different. That is, I wrote it late at night. Nonetheless, it's here.
Humans are living it rough right now (and even though some of it is purely our fault) that doesn't mean we should stop caring for ourselves.
I'm not talking about just COVID, there's also mental and physical health issues, political and diplomatic issues across the world and so much more.
We need to forgive ourselves for what we do wrong and commend when we do right.
Once we help ourselves, we have the ability to help others.
Stay safe everyone. And for hells sake, go eat that chocolate bar or get that hug if you need it.
Do something nice for yourself ;)
Love yourselves or learn to.
