HER..
"Daddy, daddy! Where are you going to? " 11 year old her asked her dad who was picking up his car keys.
"I have to go grocery shopping sweetie."
"But you promised to read a bedtime story for me in bed! " she protested.
Earlier that day, in the late afternoon she had asked her dad why he didn't read bedrime stories for her anymore and since her dad could not tell his precious daughter how stressed up he was in marriage with her nonchalant mom, he promised to start the routine of reading the stories at night for her to sleep.
"Oh sweetie, don't be sad" that was her father "How about you come with me to the grocery store and then I read a bedtime story when we come back home."
" But daddy the night monsters! Aren't they out, it's soooo late" she whined.
" Don't worry sweetie, your hero is here with you." her dad saluted her much to his amusement at the fact that she still believed in those.
"Yes! daddy and I want ice cream! "she said enthusiastically.
"OK sweetie let me tell mummy I'm going with my baby girl ." he chuckled.
Both her dad and she knew that she didn't take a liking to her mom because she was always being scolded by her. It was obvious that they never agreed on stuff. And so she didn't really care what mother knew or not.
Little did her innocent young self know what was to come.
HIM..
"I really have to go honey, it's part of my work! "
"Do you really have to though and come back in a whole month? Huh? "
"Leaving me alone with our little boy? ""Oh please, don't start with such nonsense! He is a grown boy. How is a 13 year old boy little?! "
He watched a usual scene of his mom and dad continuing to argue. His mother still pleading with his dad not to go for the business trip as he said it was.
Why can't mom and dad not argue and always smile like my friends' parents. That was his thought.
He did not understand their arguments and all he could do was watch. He drifted off to space thinking about the possible reasons they would argue this time.
"Why can't you understand that it is part of my job!" his father shouted.
He could put two and two together and suggest that it was something about his father's job. As far as he knew, his dad owned a big company. He was never told about it.
"But you can't just leave all of a sudden. " his mother weakly continued.
"I am leaving and that's final! You can't prevent me from going. I'll be back in a month. "
His father came to squat in front of him. "You are a big boy. Take good care of your mother, boy. "
"OK dad."
That was all it took for his father to leave. After that short conversation which felt like his very first talk with his dad since they rarely spoke, he watched his father leave the house fully confused.
He had heard in one month and could only assume it to mean his dad would be back in one month. Then he did have to wait. He did not even know what was going on to know what was near.
