chapter two

The next morning I woke up to the sound of Ed Sheeran ‘Thinking Out Loud’ playing from my phone. I picked my phone up and turned the alarm off. It was 8am and I had to get ready to go to work.

I had a Saturday job in a small coffee shop, it was one of the popular ones round here, so you were always on your feet there. I only got £5 an hour, which was £60 for the 12 hour shifts I do, but that’s only once a week, so it’s not much.

I could do with getting a proper job, where I got payed decent and was able to afford my own car and stuff, I mean I was saving up for one, but I still needed money to get places and what not. I needed to buy the essentials, like makeup, underwear, new clothes, that sort of thing. The teachers in the boarding school also made us pay for our own work books, like how am I supposed to pay £30 a book, thank goodness that I have a mom who gives me the money for them if I’m running low on money.

I put on black tights, a white shirt, a black skater skirt, a black cardigan and a pair of black ankle boots. It was the typical uniform for the café, with a little black apron.

I left the school and walked out of the gates, heading towards the café, it was only a 15 minute walk and the fresh air always did me the world of good. The birds were cheeping, the sun was shining and there were men in suits with brief cases heading to work.

Not long later, I was walking into the café’s staff room and putting my bag and cardigan in my locker. I put my lunch in the fridge, which was just a chicken sandwich from Greggs next door. If you don’t know what Greggs is, they are small bakery’s scattered around England.

I grabbed my apron, signing in with my card so that my boss knows what time I was in for.

I walked out and went behind the counter, greeting my friend Sophie. She had been working here for about 3 years now and she was the one who got me the job here about 2 years ago. I’d known Sophie since I was a baby. Our moms were on the same ward in hospital and Sophie was older than me by 2 days, she likes reminding me about that too.

We had been friends ever since. Our cots were right next to each other, right between our mom’s beds.

We had went to nursery and primary school together and now we were at the same boarding school. People from school are always saying we are friendship goals haha.

The café was already busy, so Sophie and I didn’t get to talk much. We were too busy serving customers and getting their food ready.

By the time 2pm came around it was finally time for mine and Sophie’s dinner. Sam and Lee were just walking behind the counter to take the shift for the afternoon because after dinner me and Sophie normally gave the place a good clean, obviously the boss wanted the place to be the cleanest around so that when inspectors came in unexpectantly then it would be spotless.

We both walked into the staffroom and I grabbed my phone out of my locker and my sandwich, putting it onto the table.

“Do you want a tea?” I asked Sophie.

“Oh, yes please. One sugar and just a little bit milk” She grinned.

“You say this every Saturday as if I don’t know how you like your tea” I laughed.

“I think it’s just habit now, I guess” Sophie giggled.

I quickly made my coffee and Sophie’s tea and put them on the table and tidied up where I had been making them.

“So is Harry taking you out for Valentine’s Day this Friday?” I asked curiously, having a sip of my coffee.

“He hasn’t said anything about it, but he said not to make plans, so I’m guessing so” She smiled.

“Ohhh, it’s like yours and Harry’s 5 year anniversary on Friday, how cute is that omg” I gushed.

“I know, what am I supposed to get him? He’s been looking at this dog tag necklace, I was thinking about going to get it tonight after I’ve finished off here” Sophie said sipping her tea.

“Oh, he’s going to love it if he keeps looking at it?” I grinned.

“The only problem is that its £150 and I think that’s why he hasn’t bought it, I mean it’s so expensive just for a little tag like that” Sophie frowned.

“Oh, that’s a bit much, maybe you should get him something else?” I offered.

“Nah, I have plenty of money saved up, so I want to treat him with something amazing this time” She smiled.

“But you got him something amazing last year, I mean a guitar is pretty awesome” I laughed.

“I know, but he really wants this, he wasn’t looking at guitars, I only got him that because he broke his last one at a party, idiot” she laughed.

“Aha, I get your point. Well I hope you have a good Valentine’s Day. Anyways we should really get cleaning or the boss will go mad haha” I said with a slight eye roll.

Me and Sophie tidied our things away and went left the room, getting all the stuff we needed from the cleaning supplies room and starting to tidy the place up.

By the time 9pm came around I was absolutely shattered and couldn’t wait to get back to the dorms so I could take a relaxing shower and go to sleep.
