"Ah, Mr. Han, you have so much to learn..."

This is what Mr. Shin, my mathematician colleague, told me before explaining, during an empty hour we had in common, what I absolutely had to know according to him. He had jumped at the opportunity to turn it into a guided tour of the premises, which I hadn't refused.

Even though I was exhausted by my colleague's tactile side, by the way he was looking at me with that suggestive gaze or by his habit of infantilizing me, treating me as if he were my self-proclaimed mentor, I listened to him carefully.

Indeed, if I wanted to integrate quickly, I had to familiarize myself furthermore with the high school organization, to understand how it daily worked, internal specificities, teacher and student's habits... I had to know how things was really working, not just how it was written on paper, and there were a lot of details that deserved to be known.

SKZ was a general high school whose organization was more inspired by the Japanese model than the Korean. Classes started at 8.00 am until 12.00 am, then from 1.30 pm until 4.30 pm. The rest of the afternoon were reserved for physical, cultural, and extra-curricular activities.

Extra-curricular activities offered to the students were mostly focused on art subjects. The high school offered numerous clubs, each headed by one or more referent teachers. It also organized ceremonies and celebrations to mark the calendar year high points, allowing students to work in groups on projects and thus, become part of the society life. Likewise, the high school often entered best students in competitions to showcase their talents.

Like all high schools in South Korea, it had students in the 1st year (15-16 years old), 2nd year (16-17 years old) and 3rd year (17-18 years old). The high school was fairly well ranked among those in Seoul. It had students with good results in some national competitions, but it was still a public high school open to all. However, it received donations from some parents, which enabled it to implement projects, buy materials and organize school trips.

The headmaster relied heavily on teachers to supervise the classes for which they were responsible. Among them, three had a special status. They were members of the disciplinary council and the headmaster's main support, particularly because of their good results with the students and their excellent reputation with students, their parents, and other teachers.
