It all happened the night of the Beacon Dance. It's the one thing I remember that keeps trying to guide me to the straight and narrow.

*flashback*

I stood in the corner of the dance floor in my jeans and boots, leaning against the wall. Even under the brim of my hat I could see the whole dance floor, and clearer than most seeing as I'm a Faunus. I looked out towards the balcony and saw my team leader, Damian Bren, pulling Weiss Schnee out onto the dance floor. As the two danced across the floor, I could see, and feel, the utter lack of hate in his heart right now, and it brought a smile to my face.

"Took him long enough," I mumbled.

I could feel the happiness and fun flowing through everyone's minds, or at least everyone except one person. I looked over to another corner and saw Yang Xiao Long, leaned against the wall with her arms crossed and watching Damian and Weiss. From what I could tell, she was feeling a sort of mild heartbreak. It only got worse from there, as Damian and Weiss kissed, and she bore witness. Her heart sank and I could see the light in her lilac eyes dim slightly. I felt bad for her, I knew how much she wanted to date Damian, and now that desire just got crushed right in front of her. Her emotions caused me a slight pain in my head, but I didn't need to be an empath to feel the hurt in my heart from how I could see her emotions.

"Let's see what happens when I let the country shine," I mumbled.

I made my way over to Yang, the blonde beauty noticing me. As I approached, I put a hand behind my back, extending my other towards her.

"Miss Xiao Long, I noticed you standing here by your lonesome. May I fix whatever ails you with a dance?" I asked.

Yang looked at me for a moment, the sadness slightly fading from her eyes. She slowly took my hand, as I pulled us onto the dance floor. I wrapped my arm around her waist and pulled her close, taking her other hand in mine. We danced for a while, just swaying to the music. I could feel her emotions begin to warm up, and as she leaned her head on my shoulder I could feel the comfort I had brought her.

"Isaac, can we go somewhere a little more private?" Asked Yang quietly.

We took off from the ballroom and went back up to the dorm hallway. I went to open the door to the RWBY dorm, but Yang stopped me.

"Can we go to DIMD's instead? Ruby and the others are probably gonna want to use our dorm," said Yang.

I slightly smiled and nodded, taking us just down the hall to my team dorm. I opened the door for the lady and walked in behind her. She sat down on my bunk with her hands on her knees and I sat down next to her.

"You know I don't need a pity party, right?" Said Yang.

"That ain't why I'm here," I said.

"Then why are you here Mr. Hick?" Asked Yang.

I opened up a cabinet next to my bunk, and pulled out a bottle of whiskey and a pair of shot glasses.

"I'm here to fix what Damian broke, and I'm no hick, I'm a cowboy," I clarified.

"What's the difference?" Asked Yang, a little skeptically.

I opened up the bottle and started pouring the shots.

"A hick lies about their way of life, flaunt their buckles and spurs like they're made of gold, and overall, hicks are dicks," I explained.

I closed the bottle up and put it on the floor.

"Then what's a cowboy?" Asked Yang, less skeptically.
