We've been in Patch a few days, but it was awkward constantly. Yang hadn't talked to me since she saw me, and it felt like she was avoiding me. I walked into the kitchen one day and she walked out to the living room. Everywhere I went, she left. My semblance usually only worked from a few meters(unless the feelings are extremely powerful and negative), and it seemed she had that figured out. I stood in the kitchen with Antonio, watching as Yang left the room again. I grimaced a little, and I guess Antonio noticed.
"Hey hermano? What's up with her? She leaves every time you get in the same room," asked my friend.
"That's the girl I told you about. The one I slept with at Beacon," I explained.
"Maldito hermano, thought you said she was all fiery and fun?" Asked Antonio.
"Beacon took its toll on everyone, not just physically," I said.
Ruby walked into the kitchen and started reaching up to the jar of cookies on the shelf. She whined a little as she was too short to reach. I grabbed the jar for the black and red haired girl and she gleefully started eating the cookies within.
"Ruby, is everything alright with Yang?" I asked the girl.
"Aren't you an empath?" She asked with a mouthful.
"She's staying out of my range. I have to see the person for my semblance to work, as well as be within twenty meters," I explained.
Ruby turned to leave the kitchen with the jar of cookies, but turned back to me.
"I don't know, she won't really talk to any of us about much. The most she's talked was just before you two got here, now she's back to how she was." Said Ruby
She left the kitchen and I leaned back to the counter where I was. The cool liquid from my silver flask stung a little as it went down. I wasn't used to Hennessy but it was what I had available to me. Taiyang walked in and saw me put the flask away, and he was immediately talking about it.
"What's in the flask?" He asked me.
"Just something to drink sir," I answered.
"I thought it might have been Yang at first, but I think you might've been the one to get in the liquor cabinet," he said.
I didn't say anything, just opened the flask and handed to him to take.
"It's fine, just ask next time."
"Yes sir, sorry 'bout that," I apologized. "Just been through a lot, you know?"
"I understand. Just don't let the bottle take you," he said, before leaving himself. "Yang! Wanna spar with me for a bit?"
My worries rested further on Yang. If she wasn't talking to anyone, then something had to be wrong.
"So you gonna take your shot?" Asked Antonio.
"What shot?" I asked.
"Eres ciego? If she's going to be sparring with her padre you can use your semblance without her noticing!" He quietly exclaimed.
Holy shit, he was right!
"Antonio you're a goddamn genius," I said, grabbing my hat.
I ran out the back door of the house and snuck around the edge of the trees to the front. I knelt down behind a large rock and could see Yang and her father in the clearing in front of the house. I set my hat behind the rock and peaked around it, I was barely in range for my semblance to work. The two started sparring and I activated my semblance. The two basically fought in circles, and every time Taiyang passed between me and Yang, I'd lose connection to her emotions.
"Come on Yang, you can do better than that," encouraged Taiyang.
As Yang fought I'd catch glimpses of her emotions. Anger.... fear.... confusion?.... and?...!? I was shocked at what Yang was feeling. It was the same feeling we both had at Beacon, the night we spent together. Even after so long she still had that spark we found together. It wasn't the alcohol... it was us. It was always us. Yang suddenly stopped fighting and started looking around. I got fully behind the rock before she could see me though, cutting my connection to her.
"Everything alright Yang?" Asked Taiyang.
"Yeah, just thought I felt something, like...?" Trailed off Yang.
I stayed silent and didn't move a muscle. I waited behind that Boulder for mere moments but it felt like an eternity.
"I must be imagining things," I heard her mumble.
I heard Yang and her dad go back to sparring, and then made my way secretly back to the house. I needed to talk to her, but I need to bide my time first. She can't know that I went behind her back like this.
