"well, i were looking and you kept staring
your thoughts pairing up with mine
and when you're so pretty and i'm so shy
you proper did give me the eye, though
i'm sure you did"

prologue

alex was only sixteen when he first saw the girl with the sweet green eyes. in the dark, he hadn't even seen her that well but he could see the lights shining in her eyes. she hadn't stopped wandering his mind since. he couldn't forget the sound of her voice and the way her lips moved as she sang. he couldn't forget the way he'd longed to kiss them since the day he saw her.

despite the night sky casting a cold look over the dark streets, the time of year made for a hot summers night.

alex had a strange good feeling about tonight, which was surprising as he was on his way to a house party (there were a lot of those at the moment to celebrate the end of their last year of secondary school).

he walked with his friends matt and jamie as they heard the booming sound of music from round the corner. sure enough, rounding the corner they could see bright, multicoloured lights coming from a large house, people lingering about outside.

"come on then, let's get some drinks in. we're gonna have a good one tonight." matt grinned as they passed the large gate and entered the cramped house.

the smell of alcohol, smoke and sweat hit alex straight away and he grimaced slightly at the distinctive odour. he'd be dealing with it all night, so he may as well get used to it.

following his mates into the kitchen to find some drinks, alex tried to avoid contact with any of the sweaty dancers lingering about, gliding past quickly as the kitchen seemed less crowded.

once he finally got there, matt handed him a shot from some lined up on the kitchen counter, "drink up lads!"

the three gulped down a few shots, the liquid burning their throats as it went down. then making their way back to the more crowded area of the house where they'd spotted some people they knew that went to their secondary school.

alex zoned out of the group conversation quite quickly, staring out into the area in which everyone was dancing and singing to the music. it dawned on him that he hadn't recognised one song that had played yet.

practically whacked out of his daze as a flurry of light blonde hair rushed past him, the startled boy stumbled back a little. he watched the figure of the small girl in a little light green skirt and black top pull her friend with her to the dance floor as the next song started.

he watched the excited smile grace her lips as she shouted the words and began to dance, her voice drowned out by the music. she drew him in and captivated him from the moment he set his young and foolish eyes upon her. well, he wouldn't be able to escape the foolish captivation no matter how old he got.

"leave me alone
i'm in control
i'm in control"

he wasn't sure why but he could feel his face becoming hot, and he thanked the dark lighting that no one could see his red cheeks.

"and girls lie too much
and boys act too tough
enough is enough"

he watched her emotive facial expressions to match the lyrics as she sang, chuckling slightly as he stood holding his beer, his friends not noticing he was completely distracted.

"well, on the minds of other men
i know she was"

a smirk made its way onto her face as she paused in anticipation of the chorus. the actions acting out as if alex was watching a film and he was on the edge of his seat.
