"an ache in your soul, it's everybody's goal
to get what they can't have
that's why you're after her
and that's why she's after him
but saying it won't change a thing"

———

eleanor's eyelids fluttered open as she heard a thud on her carpeted floor. forcing her body to roll over sleepily, she rubbed her eyes to better see what had fallen in the darkness of her room.

"alex?" her soft and slightly hoarse morning voice spoke to the silhouette lying on her floor. she had only just remembered he'd ended up sleeping next to her last night.

"morning." he propped himself up on his elbows to look at the half-asleep girl lying tangled comfortably in her bedsheets.

"why are you on my floor?" she raised an eyebrow at him.

"it's a bit hard to get dressed in the dark."

"you're leaving?" her voice came out in a whine of sadness at his words, not wanting him to go yet.

"i need to go home for a shower and i didn't want to wake you earlier than you had to." he explained, his eyes turning sad once he heard her tone.

her sad look turned into a determined one as she grabbed his arm and pulled him up back to the bed weakly, "no, just a bit longer."

ellie squeezed her eyes shut just as soon as she'd opened them, the blinding sunlight seeping through her curtains and right across her pillows. she pushed the hot blankets from her and let her body bathe in the warm light whilst remembering the events of the night before.

a smile graced her face as she thought of the newly-made memories with alex, stealing the trolley and him carrying her all the way back to matt's. then a sudden frown took over her features.

where was alex?

she knew he'd slept over the night before because she remembered the embarrassment of her parents arguing and him comforting her through it all. she wished he could be there to do that every night.

he just didn't seem like the kind of person to ditch a girl in the morning.

slowly sitting up and rubbing her tired eyes, eleanor finally spotted the folded paper that had been left on her bedside table. she squinted through the bright light at the writing after unfolding it.

'sorry for leaving without saying bye

i didn't want to wake you and i
needed to go home to get ready
