Chapter 8
CHAPTER 8
I raise my gun at him and he raises his. Behind him is a computer with a black screen, but if you look close enough there’s tiny green writing spewing random numbers and letters. The simulation.
His hair is shorter. His jaw set tighter. His eyes sharper. He isn’t the Patch that held me as I cried. He’s the monster who held off my brother as Eric dragged me away.
“I wasn’t expecting you here,” he says with a smirk. “How did you do it, eh? How did you outsmart Jeanine Matthews?”
I shrug. “Second instinct. I could fit in to Erudite as equally as I could for Dauntless or Abnegation.” The answer is a little breathless. This would’ve been so much easier if it were any other guard. Why did it have to be him?
“You escaped from Erudite. You made it into Dauntless unscathed. You ran from the abnegation sector with two bullet wounds, yet still you survive. Too bad that will all be ruined by one person with a gun.”
“How do you know that?” I ask with a frown etched into my expression.
He points to the left of him where stands a multitude of cameras distributing a live feed from various places in the city. Especially some in Abnegation.
“I’ve got a live feed from everywhere. Sound, too.” Patch smirks sadistically.
He clicks his bullet into place. I do too. Who will shoot first?
“There’s one thing I wanted to know,” I confess, still keeping my cool though. “How easy was it for you? To brainwash a sixteen year-old into loving you, treating her like she was the best thing that ever happened to you,” I say.
“Stop it,” he growls.
“Kissing her like she was the finest thing you’ve seen. Making her feel so special on the inside.” I feel tears, but I don’t try to stop them. “Making her spill all her secrets to you. How does that feel?”“Stop!” he demands again.
“Then you go and you lie to her the whole time, just on an assignment! Was that all I was to you Patch? Was I just an assignment?”
He places his hands on both ends of his gun, holding it horizontal, parallel to his body, and he slams it against my chest, pushing me to the wall.
“You were more than that,” he growls. “You were just too stupid to see it when I told you in your cell.”
“I was too stupid? Or maybe you were too stupid to realize that I didn’t give a damn about you after that. You were shit that I accidentally stepped on, but I couldn’t wash it away.”
His face contorts. “I loved you!” he screams. “I loved you, and you couldn’t realize it!”
“I did,” I say with a smirk. “I just didn’t love you back.”
He turns around, his whole body contorting with rage. He shakes and his face flushes red. I’m still breathless from being slammed into the wall, but I shove air into my lungs anyway. This is it. I can feel it.
He drops his gun to the side and in one swift movement, he turns around and tackles me to the ground.
With a punch to my face, I’m momentarily paralyzed until I finally regain my strength, and despite the growling ache in my jaw, I set my hands on his shoulders, and shift my weight so I’m on top of him. I take the heel of my gun and slam it into his forehead.
